I'm proud to know Ms. Hooper and love getting to work with the students at Abundance Academy! Check out this wonderful feature by the New York Times!

The desks came out of a dumpster, and the computers are hand-me-downs. But students say Abundance Academy is a haven from bullying and crowded classes.

Meet Jennifer Melton, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked Jennifer how she became interested in working with people who stutter:

"I’m so grateful for an experience I had early in my career working with an incredible young man who stuttered. All I knew at the time was to teach him some strategies and tell him to go home and practice. After a few sessions, I knew I was failing him. That started the journey I will likely be on for the rest of my career: learning how to be the kind of clinician that allows the client to be the hero of their own story. This is what brings me the joy. To laugh with them, cry with them, challenge and be challenged. I’ve been able to let go of the idea that I am the fixer or the expert. My job is to listen deeply, learn what is most important to them, and then guide them toward that goal."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Jennifer?

"On my quest to becoming a skilled clinician in the area of stuttering, I have been welcomed into a beautiful community which includes people who stutter, like-minded clinicians, and researchers in the field. Many of these people have dedicated their lives to stuttering advocacy and allyship. Spero Stuttering is an important part of this community, and I proudly hold the Ally of Stuttering® Seal."

I'm trained in The Lidcombe Program and Palin Parent-Child Interaction therapy. These are 2 highly effective programs for young children who stutter. Because there is no 1 approach that works for every family, together we can decide on the best one for you. Teletherapy is perfect for both programs, by the way! Some important tips for parents of young children who stutter!

Friday the 22nd October is International Stuttering Awareness Day. In celebration, each day this week we will be posting about different topics related to stammering. Today we are thinking all about openness.

When children are showing signs of awareness that it is sometimes difficult to talk, it’s really important to acknowledge it, in a low key way, to help them to know that you have noticed and it’s not something to worry about.

You can acknowledge moments of stammering lightly (‘that was a tricky word but you kept going’), normalise the usual ‘bumps’ in our own speech (no one is 100% fluent!) and make sure the child knows you are there to talk about it when they want to.

I had THE BEST time returning to yesterday to share tips for providing client-driven treatment for children who stutter to students and area speech language pathologists. I was blown away by the insights of the future SLPs in the room. I regret not getting pics with my former instructors, but it was great to see you Dr. Whitney D. Perkins and Dr. Vaughan-Robinson!
