Today is
World Autism Awareness Day

My success as an RDHAP with EJ

Patients with autism often face sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and unfamiliar environments...things we may take for granted.

That’s why meeting them where they are, both physically and emotionally, makes all the difference.

As an RDHAP, Ej and I tried many locations...
in and outside his house over the years to help him his sensitivity and control his environment.

Over the years, I’ve learned that Dentistry with General Anesthesia can be avoided with patience, consistency, and trust with these special patients. This can transform a dental visit into a positive, safe experience.

Thankfully I was able to provide preventive care for EJ for years as he became more comfortable and relaxed with going to a dental office.

By bringing care to my patients, adapting to their needs, and building trust over time in whatever setting works best for them =success

A simple oral cancer screening for a bedbound patient turned into something bigger...catching something now that needs further evaluation.

What is SDF ?

As a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP), I’m always looking for ways to make dental care more comfortable, accessible, and effective especially for those who may have difficulty getting to a traditional office.
One of the tools I use is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
SDF is a safe, quick, and non-invasive treatment that helps:
✔️ Stop cavities from progressing
✔️ Reduce sensitivity
✔️ Avoid or delay more invasive dental procedures
This is especially helpful for:
• Seniors
• Patients with special needs
• Individuals with dental anxiety
• Those receiving care at home or in care facilities

ISOLATION

Patients are placed in isolation in a facility
to prevent the spread of infectious diseases (contact, droplet, or airborne), protect immunocompromised individuals, or manage infections with high antibiotic resistance. These patients still need oral care and evaluations.
Common reasons include infections like C. diff, TB, and influenza.

Today I found decay on a senior that is unable to travel.
As RDHAPs we can place Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) a, non-invasive liquid applied to teeth to halt cavities, reduce sensitivity, and prevent further decay without drilling or needles. It is highly effective, with studies showing up to 80-90% success in stopping decay. Costs range from $20–$75 per application. Key side effects include permanent black staining of the decayed area.
This will buy time until the family arranges a Mobile Dentist to come to see her.
