What’s really in these top perfumes and how do the ingredients affect you? Conventional perfumes are loaded with toxic chemicals. Some are irritants and allergens, while others are endocrine disruptors that interfere with the body's hormones, and a few are carcinogens, linked to cancer development. People with conditions like asthma or pregnant individuals are particularly vulnerable to these effects. I listed the moderate/high risk ingredients below and what they can do to your body. It’s never too late to start a low toxic lifestyle! 🌿
Benzophenone-3: a common chemical UV filter used in sunscreens, cosmetics, and packaging to protect from sun damage. BP-3 has been identified as a potential endocrine disruptor, meaning it may interfere with the body's hormone system. has been linked to environmental issues, particularly harm to coral reefs, leading to increased scrutiny and restrictions in some regions.
Benzyl Salicylate: chemical compound used in perfumes and cosmetics for its sweet, floral scent and its ability to act as a solvent and fixative. It poses potential dangers, primarily related to skin allergies (including contact dermatitis), irritation, and endocrine disruption. Some laboratory studies have indicated that benzyl salicylate exhibits estrogenic activity. For example, in vitro studies showed it influenced the proliferation of breast cancer cells (MCF7) and activated human estrogen receptors.
Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): a lab-made chemical used as an antioxidant and preservative in a wide range of consumer products. BHT can interfere with the body's natural hormones, which can affect growth, metabolism, and reproduction. High doses of BHT have been linked to damage in the liver, kidneys, and lungs in animal studies. Some people even experience skin irritation and allergic reactions.
