Today is Trans Day of Visibility. 🏳️‍⚧️

Visibility means more than being seen—it means being respected, affirmed, and protected at every stage of life.

That includes death care.

Trans people deserve dignity not only in how they live, but in how they are cared for and remembered after death. We do this by honoring chosen names, pronouns, identities, and chosen family in medical settings, funeral services, and memorials.

Too often, that dignity is denied.

So today, we're thinking about what real visibility looks like:
💜Being seen in life
💙Being respected in systems
🧡Being honored in death

Because everyone deserves to be known as who they truly are—always.

The Asterix* presents Advanced Directives with Sonja Moore and Grey Allen. Learn how to create a legally binding medical Advanced Directive to ensure you receive the medical care you want, and to make sure the person of your choosing can lawfully make medical decisions for you. This workshop is taking place January 17 at 2pm in the second floor community room at Wirt Library. Please bring writing utensils! Forms will be provided.

The Asterix* intends to provide a welcoming and affirming space and events for 2SLGBTQ+ folks, the strategically undervalued members of our community, and our allies.

Angela Shook is an end-of-life doula, companion animal doula and the Past President of the National End-of-Life-Doula Alliance (NEDA). She is an instructor for the doula programs at the University of Vermont and offers multiple end-of-life educational workshops and grief support groups. She is a veterinary doula with Pet Well Mobile Vet where she assists with euthanasia and the end-of-life care and support of companion animals. Angela has received the Animal Hospice Advocate Certificate from the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC). She is a certified Pet Loss Grief Specialist through the Association of Pet Loss and Bereavement. She is also the owner of Dragonfly End-of-Life Services where she provides guidance and support to the dying and those who love them across the globe. Angela and her doula work have been featured in Time Magazine, The New York Times, Well + Good Magazine and several podcasts including End-of-Life University, Best Life Best Death and Wolfie's Wish. She is the co-author of The Doula Tool Kit: The Complete Practical Guide for End-of-Life Doulas and Caregivers. She is currently working on her next book Hearts Unleashed, a guidebook to support pet caregivers through their companion animals' end-of-life journeys.

Her work and advocacy emphasizes the power of education, community, and collaboration. Toula is committed to raising awareness of intuitive presence and its impact on cultural change in the tapestry of innovation and creating brave spaces and equitable access to service. ♥️🌿

Catch us in Grand Rapids this Saturday .peninsula for a beautiful festival that weaves together art and conservation. We’ll be set up along Front Avenue with information about little known but more sustainable end-of-life options already available in Michigan. Practices like natural burial, utilizing an end-of-life doula, opting for a home funeral, or making your own burial vessel are just a few of many already available options. We’ll have a wealth of local information and resources to share about these choices and so much more.

We’ll even have a few quirky but fun interactive activities you can participate in as well! Also, consider bringing along an old shirt (natural fiber works best!) to DIY blockprint the nature-centric logo or other ecology-themed designs on. Hope to see you there!
