Everyone has a home at Big Wheel Coaching!

We currently coach athletes 13-68 years old!

And spending time together in the bike is one of our favorite things to do. Especially as a cool down after a challenging race to flush the legs and go over the highs and lows!

3 generations of athlete here with coach repping the 40+; longtime athlete in the 25+; and Tiny Coach Seamus leading our U8 development program.

We hope to see you at the races or out on the bike soon!

Balance doesn’t always mean “everything in equal parts…”

Although it can, for most of us though, “balance” is more aptly thought of as the complicated dance of finding equilibrium between long work hours, a multitude of family commitments, and exciting athletic ambitions.

In practice it’s long work hours paired with potent workouts.

Other days it’s “shoe-horning” extra training time in before family plans.

And sometimes it’s all that in the span of a few days.

But when all the work comes together and our pursuit of success produces fruit, it’s something to be cherished.

So this week, and all season long, let Mr Nortons wisdom buoy your early mornings, busy afternoons , and long days.

“Never forget the joy of living!”

Athlete Highlight: Kevin Wake took to this weekends with the goal of earning a great Leadville Starting Corral and he did just that! It was a great day on the bike and the photos prove it!

His preparation was not without challenge and setback. But despite the adversity, Kevin never lost focus on the goal… have fun and focus all his energy in pursuit of the fastest way around the 2-lap course that traversed 9,000 punishing feet of climbing.

Kevin is a great example of Mr Nortons quote that encourages us to never lose sight of the fun as we go through our days.

And as the photos show, from a downhill tuck that screams “Yeeha Cowboy!” to a finish line bunny hop that proved there was still room for fun amidst the exhaustion, Kevin made his Sea Otter memorable.

Great work, Kev! We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see what Leadville holds for you this summer!

🫶 SEA OTTER!

What a weekend! And one more day of racing remains!!

This is a small cross section of the amazing athletes and their families that we have the pleasure to work with!

So many wonderful people with diverse stories and experiences out on the gravel - cross country - enduro events at Sea Otter!

We will do our best to make a highlight reel, but wanted to begin with a big ‘thank you’ for all the support on track, at the venue and share stories in between!

Soak it all up, and start training for next year!

Hard work and consistent training is most certainly rewarding, but it’s not without challenge and/or difficulty.

The work required to build ourselves into the “butterfly” this Proverb refers to… (for our context one heckuva bike rider!) can take its toll and feel brutal.

But like the caterpillar who morphs into a fluttering butterfly our best athletic performances lie beyond the transformation that occurs with consistent and purposeful training.

Although we don’t grow wings, the world sure looks different with the fitness to ride bikes faster and more efficiently than we ever have, which some might say…

“Feels like flying!!!”

Athlete Highlight: has been diligently training and working hard to re-develop the racing acumen he enjoyed as a younger man. It’s taken a few seasons of consistent training and skill building but here he is OFF THE FRONT in his hometown criterium, the !

Not only was Shahrokh off the front in the race with his peers, but he was off the front amidst a combined field of racers with riders nearly 10-years his junior.

And to top it all off he finished a strong 3rd place in the final sprint!

Congratulations Shahrokh! We are so proud of you and excited to see this success. It is hard earned and well deserved, Buddy!

When we strive to get better, when we want to improve, something has to change in either our approach, preparation, or ex*****on.

In most cases, things need to change in all three areas to get the results we desire.

That’s why Mr Lichtenbergs quote points us to an important realization that change is a MUST.

We can dream about better outcomes and results, but without making changes to our approach, preparation, and/or ex*****on we cannot expect improvement on “game day”.

So as Spring gets into full-swing and Summer events loom, now is a great time to evaluate progress and recommit to making the changes necessary to put ourselves on track to the performances we desire.

Don’t shy way from change, embrace it, because when we make change less abrasive or complicated, progress comes faster and more consistently in all we do.

Athlete Highlight: has worked hard throughout the early part of the year to build solid form for the race season and it is showing at each race!

He has been sniffing around for the break-aways and mixing it up alongside his teammates as their team has been competing in criteriums throughout SoCal.

A big result is on the horizon for Jon, we know it, and we want to highlight the consistency and commitment to training that has kept him competitive despite long days at work and extended commutes.

Great work Jon, we are super proud of you and all your hard work to be able to race at the front this year and in years past!

Way to go Buddy!

Another great Coach Wooden quotes comes to the fore as this weeks post.

The notion of “staying the course” keeps coming up around Camp Big Wheel these days as the results we seek (as Athletes) often take more time and patience to achieve than we expect.

It’s normal to be impatient, it happens to all of us, Coaches too!

But that’s why we seek the wisdom and experience of champions like Coach Wooden who reiterates the need for us to “stay the course”.

It is said that good things come to those that wait…

But for endurance athletes like us it might be better said that “good results come to those of us that ‘stay the course’ and persevere through setbacks!”

Success in sport and in life takes time and plenty of discipline, hence why Coach Wooden reminds us that when adversity arises, we should continue to grind, only harder and smarter!

Athlete Highlight: has had a solid start to the season tackling the 3/4 and 2/3 categories at all the crits this year.

And he is getting better with each race!

Faster, stronger, more confident, and savvy.

But it’s not always been easy for Greg, there have been a few tough races, but each time he has bounced back in a way that would make Coach Wooden proud.

Reaffirming his commitment to training and getting better after each “thwart”!

Great work Greg! Keep up the solid effort and thank you for showing us what perseverance can look like!

You rock, Buddy!

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you read Mr Ali’s famous quote?

Buying better shoes to ride in?

For us, we are reminded of the great book “They Call Me Coach” in which famed basketball coach, John Wooden describes instructing his collegiate basketball players on how to properly put on their socks.

Long before he taught his players winning strategies, Coach Wooden taught his national-caliber Athletes how to take care of their feet.

Because if their feet were blistered or injured his players would miss valuable practice time.

And missed practice time translated into poor team cohesion and losses.

In endurance sport, this concept plays out much the same, in that when ignored, little details like under-fueling, poor bike fit, lack of recovery, and over-shooting training targets end up causing setbacks that become very difficult to bounce-back from.

So as silly as it seems, yes, Mr Ali is correct in that it normally it is not the mountains ahead that derail us from achieving our goals, its most often our daily habits and distractions.

So today, this week, and all season long, don’t lose your focus on the small details, because disciplined daily habits will propel you toward your goals much faster than you would ever imagine.

Athlete Highlight: knows a thing or two about daily discipline and staying consistent in his training. In the not so distant past he had to miss a season or two of racing in order to focus on family and his professional goals.

But he remained disciplined about his training and dreamed about racing alongside his teammates, as it is one of his favorite things to do. That commitment and consistency paid dividends as he is back to racing this season and looking strong too!

We are biased but it sure is good to have Byron back in the peloton and at the pointy end of the local races!

Chapeaux Byron! Thank you for showing us what consistency looks like and how to keep the “little things” from derailing us in our pursuit of sporting goals.

You rock Brother!

One year ago our coaches did a Strada Rosa Recon ride - in the rain and cold!!

Today - not so much!! Our local weekly Thursday Crit Practice has started and it’s a great place for us to see friends and clients, and get a ripper of a workout!

Coach & Seamus came with ice socks and cold water for everyone - because it was HOT! 🥵

Coach got a great workout and 2 laps with Seamus!

16 yrs ago we were out there handing out popsicles after the ride. We love our local community, bikes and all the people we get to ride and work with!

The road less traveled…

For those with a passion for sport, taking the road less traveled, is a daily choice.

An opportunity to do something challenging, to stretch our limits, and yes, to seek adventure.

If Mr Frost was a roadie we’d like to think he might have travelled to Europe to ride the high-mountains of le Tour de France or the centuries old pavé of the Flandrian Classics.

If he was into gravel, he would probably train for UnBound, the BWR series, or Gravel Worlds in Nebraska.

But if he owned a Shred-Sled, and could do only one bucket-list event, we are sure Mr Frost would grab a friend and go to the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa!

It’s EIGHT stages of epic mountain-biking that covers approximately 430-miles with 52,000’ of climbing… and you have to do it all with a partner!

Without a doubt, it’s a challenge for the rider that consistently chooses the road less traveled!

And we are excited to coach one such adventurer… The one and only Ms .

As a multi time world and national champion, Tammy has been a competitor all her life and this year, actually right now, as you read this, she is racing (and leading her category) the most epic mountain bike race on the planet.

The Cape Epic is physically demanding and the trails are quite technical, not to mention the extreme heat, post-stage transfers, and epically long race routes all demand an Athlete be their absolute best just to finish each day.

So it only makes sense that Tammy would bring her lifetime of experience and race savvy to tackle this challenging event.

We couldn’t be more proud of Tam-Tam, not to mention thankful for her example that reminds us to choose the road less traveled a bit more often because adventure, success, and fun lie down that path!

Please help us wish Tammy and her teammate Rhonda “Good Luck” as they continue to lead their age-category at The Cape and show the younger masters racers what they are made of.

Smash it girls, we are rooting for you!!!
