💧Hand expression is something every new Mom should learn how to do! It’s free, always available, and often more effective than a pump in those first few days after delivery!
🕒 When to use it?
• The First Days: Perfect for collecting “liquid gold” (colostrum) when your baby is still learning to latch. No you don’t need to supplement with formula and you don’t need to use a pump or a bottle. If your baby is sleepy or having trouble latching, the most effective alternate feeding method is spoon/syringe feeding colostrum.
• Relieving Engorgement: If you’re feeling uncomfortably full or “rock hard,” expressing a little can soften the breast.
• Boosting Supply: Hand expressing after a pumping or feeding session can help empty the breast more thoroughly, signaling your body to make more milk.
• Clearing Clogged Ducts: The skin-to-skin contact and targeted pressure can help move a stubborn blockage.
• No Pump? No Problem: If you’re away from your baby and forgot your pump parts, this is your backup!
🤔How to do it (The C-Hold Method)
1. Wash Up: Clean hands are a must! 🧼
2. Get Flowing: Gently massage your breasts and/or apply a warm compress for a minute to trigger your let-down.
3. The “C” Shape: Place your thumb and fingers about 1–1.5 inches back from the arreola, forming a “C” shape.
4. Press Back: Press your hand and fingers straight back toward your chest wall.
5. Compress & Release: Roll your thumb and fingers forward (without sliding over the skin!) to compress the milk ducts.
6. Find the Rhythm: Repeat in a steady rhythm. It might take a few minutes before you see drops!
💡 Pro-Tip
Don’t squeeze the ni**le itself— that can be painful and won’t yield much milk. Aim for the tissue just behind the ar**la where the milk ducts are located. You might only get a few drops and this is completely normal! When your baby is first born her belly is only the size of a marble.
