Problems may involve the conjunctiva, the iris, the anterior and posterior chambers of the eyes, the retina and even the optic nerve (the main nerve supply of the eye). A person may even go blind. However, most of these eye conditions resolve once Chikungunya resolves or if steroids are given.
The most common eye conditions in Chikungunya are conjunctivitis, eye pain, and pain behind the eyeball, which may occur during the acute phase.
