We're the Paeonia Dewey Medical Club! On Tuesday, we took the Mirai excursion with club members to see the facility and learn about the real medical field. It was very informative to watch how the hospital uses equipment and techniques for accurate treatment and to notice how committed and caring your doctors, nurses, and staff are with their patients.

Also, interviewing the doctors helped us a lot to gain more knowledge. We were able to ask about teenage mental health, something we are very interested in. Everything shared between us was helpful and encouraging for those hoping to study medicine in the future.

We hope we can come back and participate in more practical activities. We really appreciate once more for all the generosity and the inspiration Mirai Center has given us.😊😊

Finally, the time has come!! DPMC wrapped up this year’s last activity, “Pig Hearts Dissection”. 👏🎉 Pig hearts are anatomically and functionally the closest to human hearts, and this similarity makes them useful in various scientific applications. That’s why we decided to do the dissection on pig hearts after studying heart anatomy.🫀

We first dissected the heart to observe its structure and chambers. It begins with identifying the heart’s external features and then involves opening and dissecting the chambers to reveal the valves, ventricles, and atria. Throughout this, we also realized that ventricles have thicker walls than the atria because they need to pump blood to greater distances and against higher pressures.🩸

Although it was a challenging hands-on experience, being able to physically touch and see each part of the heart made the learning process far more impactful.😊😊Most importantly, everyone supported one another throughout the activity, turning what could have been a daunting task into a collaborative and enriching experience.🪻

Today, the Paeonia club studied heart anatomy in order to better understand the direction of blood flow and the internal structure of the heart. It was a necessary thing to remember since the heart plays an important role in our body in pumping blood, providing oxygen around the body, and delivering waste products (carbon dioxide) to the lungs to be removed.

Additionally, we learned that most arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, while generally, veins carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart. Besides that, we also memorized the names of each of the 4 chambers and valves.

These lessons helped us become familiar with the concept of anatomy as well as gain prior science knowledge.

Heyy, we're back! This time, we did the simple interrupted suture, which is a method used for wounds in real life. It all started with us first watching videos on how to do the simple interrupted suture. This stitch closure is very commonly used in medicine to create a closure for wounds or cuts.

After we watched the example videos, we had the opportunity to practice first-hand using actual suturing tools. At first, the suturing was a bit difficult, but we caught on quickly. I truly felt like we were stitching real skin when we were suturing the bananas, and could pay close attention to how to be deliberate and conscientious with each stitch.

On another note, we learned how to inspect the tools and ensure that every stitch was equal before tightening to become more familiar with suturing. What an excellent experience! I know we are enthusiastic to continue to practice and develop our skills even further in the future!🥰

Hello! We're the Paeonia Club! In this activity, we practiced ankle bandaging, a crucial skill for treating sprains, strains, and minor injuries. We learned how to properly support the joint, reduce swelling, and protect it from further damage. First, we reviewed when ankle bandaging is needed.

Then, we practiced step-by-step techniques: starting with anchoring the bandage, wrapping in figure-8 motions for stability, and making sure the pressure was firm but not too tight. We also discussed common mistakes (like cutting off circulation!) and how to check for them.

Finally, everyone took turns practicing on each other, getting feedback, and adjusting their technique to make it better.

Hello, we’re the Paeonia Club!
Our first activity was about ‘Mask Filtration’. We used four different types of masks (Cloth, Surgical, KN95, and Seiko 5D masks) and subjected them to three different tests: breathability, water resistance, and filtration efficiency. We tested each of these aspects separately, using various methods. Our objective with the ‘Mask Filtration’ tests was to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each mask type and explore which would be the best one for our purposes.

For the Breathability test we first tried on all of the masks individually. We then placed a thin piece of paper in front of the person's nose and mouth and asked them to breathe normally. The more the paper moved, the better the breathability of the mask.

The second test assessed the water resistance of each mask. For this test, we sprayed water four times at a distance of 5 cm from each of the masks, which included Cloth, Surgical, KN95, and Seiko 5D. Each mask was placed against cardboard with different spacing for each spray. After spraying water on the mask, we waited for 15 seconds before removing it. If the cardboard was wet, then we can conclude that the water resistance of that mask was poor. If the cardboard had little to no water on it, the water resistance of that mask was good!

In our last test, we evaluated the filtration efficiency of each mask. To do this, we put a piece of fabric between the nozzle of a portable vacuum cleaner and the inside of the mask. Then, we turned the vacuum on and passed it through the flour for 20 seconds. The greater the amount of flour that was in the fabric, the poorer the filtration efficiency of the mask.

I’m Yunbi Gong, and I am excited to welcome you to the Dewey Paeonia Medical Club
(DPMC)! As the founder of this club, I planned it in order to provide more familiar initiative
activities for students to explore medical opportunities. DPMC works to offer adventure
journeys for all students ranging from beginners to experienced people through an
approachable environment although healthcare may at first feel tough.
Launching this club in 2025 will give me a lot of great achievements as I enjoy uniting
members who love to learn and develop their new skills. Every DPMC member regardless of
their interest in medicine or healthcare as a whole makes priceless contributions to the
club. 🩺
We are about to begin the first chapter with every club member. We will both gain medical
knowledge and collaborate to help each other grow throughout our path of learning. I
