The origin of the “three-week theory” has nothing to do with habits, per se. It apparently originated from the 1960 self-help book Psycho-Cybernetics, in which plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz observed that it took his patients about 21 days to get used to their new appearance after surgery.

No formal experiment was conducted to verify this, but the book applied this 21-day timeline to self-transformation in many other wide-ranging aspects of life. For instance, the book also set three weeks as the time needed for people to get used to a new house or change their mind about their beliefs. (Scientific American)

Even without much solid research, the 21-day myth became widely accepted.

Give yourself some grace. Making long lasting change takes time. It’s not weak to need support or someone to talk to while you are setting the foundation for your health and processing all the ups and down.

🌟 Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but let’s clear up a common misconception: it doesn’t cure type 2 diabetes — it can put it in remission. Here’s why:

When type 2 diabetes develops, high blood sugar levels and insulin resistance over time can damage the beta cells in the pancreas. These cells are responsible for producing insulin, the hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. Unfortunately, once a significant number of beta cells are destroyed, they don’t regenerate.

While bariatric surgery can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the need for medication, it doesn’t restore those lost beta cells. That’s why remission—better blood sugar control without diabetes medications—is possible, but a full cure isn’t.

To stay in remission, it’s essential to embrace lifestyle changes, monitor your health, and follow up regularly with a dietitian and your healthcare providers. 💪✨

🎄 Holiday Eating Tips for Bariatric Surgery Patients 🎄

The holidays are filled with tempting treats and big meals, but you can still enjoy the season while staying on track with your bariatric journey! Here are some tips to help you navigate holiday gatherings:

🥗 Prioritize Protein
Start with lean proteins like turkey, chicken, or fish to keep you full and support your recovery.

🥦 Choose Smart Sides
Opt for veggies, but go easy on buttery or creamy dishes. A small serving of roasted vegetables or a simple salad is a great choice!

🍴 Portion Control
Use a small plate and take tiny bites. Remember, your stomach has a much smaller capacity now!

⏳ Eat Slowly
Take your time to savor each bite. This helps you avoid overeating and discomfort.

💧 Skip the Drinks During Meals
Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking fluids to avoid feeling too full.

🍬 Be Mindful with Sweets
If you want dessert, take one or two bites to satisfy your craving without overindulging. Be aware of what might cause stomach distress!

🛑 Listen to Your Body
Stop eating as soon as you feel full. It’s okay to save leftovers or skip seconds. Try taking a small bite of each thing.

💡 Plan Ahead
Bring a bariatric-friendly dish to share, like a high-protein casserole or low-sugar dessert.

🎉 Focus on the Fun
The holidays are about connection, not just food. Enjoy the company, games, and festive vibes!

Your health is the best gift you can give yourself this season. 🌟 You’ve got this! 💪
