WHAT KIND OF MOTIVATION IS BEST? 💪
We've left January, and are full steam ahead into a new month. Some of your new years resolutions may be losing steam, or you may be feeling some covid-fatigue. If you're trying to find your motivation you may be wondering how to stay motivated or to set goals that will stick.
At first glance, intrinsic motivation seems to be the most appealing. Of course it's great to be motivated to do things because they give you immediate enjoyment. Unfortunately, sometimes a new activity does not give you those immediate feelings of joy. You may have experienced when you're starting a work out, sometimes it takes a while to get into a routine. It may also take time to find an exercise that you love and look forward to which means being disciplined and sticking with it until you find your groove. Many find after learning a habit that is fueled by extrinsic motivation (doing a 30 day challenge at work) they learn to enjoy exercise on a personal level and that initial external motivation becomes an internal motivation that they can commit to.
Being motivated just by extrinsic motivation can be a trap as well. Those who workout only to meet a specific aesthetic or to lose weight often find it difficult to stay motivated long term.

How did you get started on your fitness journey? Do you still feel motivated by your workouts?

MENTAL HEALTH AND EXERCISE
In the last year, you may have found it more difficult to establish a fitness routine and stay motivated. In a recent study, 69% of people have reported signs of burnout so if you are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone.
In honor of we wanted to post on the benefits of exercise on mental health especially these days where daily struggles may feel Sisyphean.
So why is movement so important for mental health?
✨it can improve your sleep patterns, especially if you tend to lie awake at night or suffer from insomnia
✨ a mind body connection can help you feel, grounded, powerful and help improve self esteem.
✨ it is one of the most powerful anti-depressants there is. When ever I’m about to lose it, I do a workout and put my world back into perspective
✨ it naturally helps manage stress by releasing endorphins and relieving tension
✨ it has been known to have significant positive impacts on concerns from anxiety, to adhd to schizophrenia
✨ it helps boost cognition by improving memory and ability to solve problems
✨ it can improve energy and your ability to accomplish other tasks

While exercise can have many benefits on mental health if you’re having difficulty getting started you don’t have to do it alone. Never be afraid to reach out to our community, a friend or family member

⚡️Collagen and Protein Smoothie Recipe - Save For Later⚡️

Trust us, you’re going to want to save this post for later. This smoothie is not only delicious, it contains superstar ingredients that aid with muscle and body restoration and regulation.

✨Ingredients✨
• 3/4 cup milk of your choice
• 1/2 cup of spinach
• 1/2 banana OR 1 banana
• 1 tbsp organic pure maple syrup (skip the maple syrup if using a whole banana)
• 1 tbsp almond butter
• 1 tsp chia seeds
• 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
• 1 scoop collagen
• handful of ice

Throw all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

It’s hard to determine the true star of this nutrient packed smoothie, but this is why we love this recipe.

🍃Spinach is high in antioxidants that help with anti-inflammation and disease protection. It also positively influences gene expression involved in metabolism and triggers the release of satiety hormones, making you feel fuller.
🍌 Bananas help moderate blood sugar. They are also a good source fibre, which can help digestive health. They contain potassium, which is essential for heart health. They also may help reduce exercise-related muscle cramps and soreness.
💪 Collagen helps with muscle, tendon, ligament, and cartilage building and repair. It may help with speeding up your recovery time and with injury prevention, since it strengthens joints and ligaments.

Are you moving your body enough per week? One in three adults get the recommended amount of physical activity per week. It is recommended that healthy adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. 150 minutes may sound like a lot initially, but it works out to about 30 minutes per day.

If you're looking for additional ways to supplement your weekly workouts, why not try breaking up your day with workouts that can be done at your desk. Whether you want to schedule a workout break, or you want to spice up your Zoom call, there are numerous simple exercises that can be done using the space around you, and little to no equipment! Breaking up your day by incorporating movement can also help make those long days at the office (whether you’re still embracing that WFH life or you’re back in the office) go by a little quicker.

Adding in an additional quick workout to your day has numerous health benefits.
💡Exercise improves brain performance by improving alertness, attention, and motivation. Exercising not only gets the brain ready to learn, it makes retaining information easier. It also increases overall mental stamina.
💡Studies have shown that working out during work hours improves time management, increases productivity, and increases overall daily satisfaction.
💡Exercise releases endorphins which lower stress, improve sleep and boosts self-esteem.

Not sure where to start? Try incorporating a quick resistance band circuit. This circuit is a great full body workout that can be done sitting at your desk.

💪15 x Leg Pulses
💪15 x One Sided Leg Pulses (per leg)
💪20 x Arm Pulses
💪12 x Bow and Arrows
💪8 x Russian Twists

💡Remember to keep your core engaged and squeeze your glutes (during leg pulses)💡

✨HOW TO IMPROVE RESILIENCE✨

Why are we talking about resilience on a fitness page? We take a holistic approach to health and when you are setting goals that you mean to keep, resilience will be a factor in your motivation and empowering you to keep going even when things become more difficult.

✨Mental Health - especially after the year we all have had, taking an inventory of your mental health is particularly important. Find tools that work for you whether it is speaking to a trusted friend or relative, a trained professional or developing tools such as positive self talk and journaling on your own. I personally find daily movement to be critical to mental health, but how I talk to myself is also important. Your mental fitness can be trained like a muscle and you can work on retraining certain reactions you have to situations to mitigate unnecessary stress.

✨Self expertise and knowledge - You know yourself better than anyone else, so trust your intuition instead of fighting it. If something doesn’t feel right to you, explore the feelings of why. Your default mode is likely in place to protect a part of yourself, so there may be a good reason not to invest time or energy into a project or situation that makes you feel uncomfortable.

✨Mindfulness - No matter how busy you become, take time to unplug, to breathe and to sit still without screens. Mindfulness can come in many forms, and it doesn’t have to follow a precise formula of meditation but it should be intentional, you should be connecting to your body and breath, and you should be able to get to a moment of either clarity (this is how I feel and why) or acceptance (this is happening, and worrying or doing x will not change that - so you can dedicate energy and resources to solving problems that are worth your time and energy)

✨Energy management - be aware of how much energy certain activities take from you and also be aware some days these activities may demand more from you. This will help you set boundaries, prevent burnout and be more connected to your needs.

Wondering the best time time to workout? ☀️🌙
There may be programs or people with the psuedo science degrees that preach the importance of working out at a specific time to sell a program or product but the most important thing is that you listen to your body and workout at a time you can stick to. If it’s right when you wake up so you can start off your day the right way, amazing. If it’s to sneak away and give yourself a few moments of peace any time after that, that is also awesome.
My biggest tip: which I am currently guilty of not adhering to due to is picking the same days and times each week and sticking to it. Don’t let your daily movement be an afterthought.
When is your favorite time to move?

🔥 Not getting results? 🔥
I have had customers ask me this a lot so I thought I would help shed some knowledge on common fitness myths.
Some ask me why I don’t sell cardio equipment. Many others have reached out to me because since their gyms have closed they are running and not able to maintain their fitness level OR have actually seen weight gain/loss of muscle.
First of all - this post is not hate on cardio. Cardio can help with cardiovascular fitness, improve your immune system, mood and productivity. It burns calories and can assist in firing up your metabolism. If you love cardio, I say do what you love.

If you’re doing cardio because you feel like you have to in order to see results, I have some good news for you.
I stock the products I do because if they are used correctly they will get your heart rate up so you can see the benefits of cardio, but also build muscle. The benefit of building muscle is that you can work on body composition, prevent injuries, feel better and burn more calories just by existing. Strength training is also more likely to help fight off imbalances that can come from cardio which usually only develops the lower body.

With more muscle you also burn more calories consistently, so even if you burn 400 calories during a cardio workout, as soon as your done workout, those benefits are over. Weight training has been shown to continue to burn calories even when you are at rest.

People often assume they are burning more calories than they are from cardio, and often also tie too much of a food based reward system to their workouts. “Earning” processed food because you worked out hard does not always balance out if you have specific goals or are trying to be healthy. We want you to eat things when you want them, but also be cognizant that it is not a reward/punishment system that is sustainable.

HOME GYM MOTIVATION TIPS 🔥🔥

🔥Pick a dedicated space in your house that is free of clutter, distractions and work stress. This helps you stay on track during your workouts and also won’t give you that feeling of dread when gym time rolls around
🔥 Even if you aren’t commuting to the gym a schedule is important. Pick a time of day that you can stick to and keep it consistent.
🔥 Have the equipment that gets you hyped. Part of why Super Human started was I saw so many people struggling to find motivation with body weight alone or a few sets of weights. If you can go in and get it done with a few tools, great. I find the key to long term success is having that exercise or piece of equipment you look forward to. For me it’s my suspension trainer.
🔥 effective programs to shore up gaps. It may be disheartening to workout and feel like you’re losing your gym results. That’s where it’s important to make changes and adjust your routine so the intensity stays the same
🔥 never underestimate the power of good lighting
