WHAT KIND OF MOTIVATION IS BEST? 💪
We've left January, and are full steam ahead into a new month. Some of your new years resolutions may be losing steam, or you may be feeling some covid-fatigue. If you're trying to find your motivation you may be wondering how to stay motivated or to set goals that will stick.
At first glance, intrinsic motivation seems to be the most appealing. Of course it's great to be motivated to do things because they give you immediate enjoyment. Unfortunately, sometimes a new activity does not give you those immediate feelings of joy. You may have experienced when you're starting a work out, sometimes it takes a while to get into a routine. It may also take time to find an exercise that you love and look forward to which means being disciplined and sticking with it until you find your groove. Many find after learning a habit that is fueled by extrinsic motivation (doing a 30 day challenge at work) they learn to enjoy exercise on a personal level and that initial external motivation becomes an internal motivation that they can commit to.
Being motivated just by extrinsic motivation can be a trap as well. Those who workout only to meet a specific aesthetic or to lose weight often find it difficult to stay motivated long term.
How did you get started on your fitness journey? Do you still feel motivated by your workouts?
