Why do some women suddenly discover they're autistic during menopause? 🤔

It's not coincidence—it's making connections

Our new blog explores how hormonal changes can unmask lifelong traits, bringing clarity to decades of feeling 'different'.

Many women describe this discovery as 'finally having the instruction manual for my life.'

✨Could this be your story too?✨

Alexa, name that emotion. What is Alexithymia? In my clinical practice, I often work with clients who struggle to identify and express their emotions...this is called Alexithymia.

As a psychologist who focuses on Autism assessments, I see how this manifests daily, and see first hand the overlap between alexithymia and Autism.

You might be experiencing alexithymia if:
* You feel emotions intensely but can't quite name them
* Others ask how you feel and you genuinely don't know (I'm feeling something, but is it anger or sadness?)
* You notice physical sensations (like a racing heart) but struggle to connect them to emotions
* You often feel overwhelmed but can't pinpoint why

Research consistently shows that gastrointestinal (GI) issues affect 50-70% of autistic individuals, a rate significantly higher than the general population. Recent studies in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders highlight that these aren't just coincidental symptoms – they're an important part of many autistic people's lived experience.

Common gastrointestinal issues include:
* Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
* Food sensitivities and allergies
* Reflux and stomach pain
* Altered gut microbiome composition

Why the connection? Several factors are potentially at play:
* Different dietary patterns due to sensory preferences and/or intolerances
* Increased stress response impacting digestive function
* Genetic factors affecting both neurodevelopment and GI function
* Altered gut-brain axis communication

Understanding this connection is crucial for proper support and healthcare. If you're autistic and experiencing GI issues, you're not alone – it's a recognised aspect of autism that deserves attention and proper medical care.

"Masking" Autistic traits can often feel necessary in neurotypical world, but as we learn more about the long term negative affects on mental health and wellbeing questions need to be asked about who the masking is for, and who's wellbeing is most important (the answer is yours). The act of unmasking and becoming your true, beautiful self in all its autistic glory can be terrifying, liberating, confusing and wonderful all at once. Finding out how your brain works and why you do what you do is a wonderful self discovery.

Autistic women and AFAB can and do perform at a high level in the workplace, but often at a great cost to their wellbeing. While the external measures of success might be ticking all the boxes, internally women can be burning out, finding life harder and harder to cope with, and feeling their bodies want to shut down. Women and those AFAB often develop high levels of masking and camouflaging to disguise their autistic traits, often so well that their autism isn't even obvious to themselves. There is no one size fits all for autism (or many things, really). If you're interested in exploring your brain and whether autism is a fit for you, 2025 assessment bookings are now open on my website.
