Let’s talk about what massage therapists can and can’t do.

Within our scope of practice:
•Soft tissue mobilization (skin, muscles, fascia)
•Cupping
•IASTM (using a handheld tool to assist in soft tissue work)
•Passive stretching/ mobility

Not within our scope:
•Joint Mobilizations (ā€œcracking your backā€)
•Dry needling
•Acupuncture
•Diagnose injuries
•Provide nutrition advice or exercise programming (unless licensed or certified to do so)

The good news is, we usually have awesome providers we can refer you to if you are interested in things that aren’t within our scope! Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers, and Dietitians are all people I enjoy working with to help clients get the well-rounded help they need. I’ll tag some local providers I trust below.

Calf work and cupping for this clients nagging Achilles tightness.

The tissues themselves tell a story. Our treatment response is based on what the tissues tell us.

Now only if muscles could actually speak, I’m sure they’d have a lot say. šŸ¤“

There’s a lot of information out there. Lots of posts about how you SHOULD move your body, the BEST way to recover, the MOST EFFICIENT mobility movement for your injury, the TOP exercise program for when your ā€œglutes don’t fireā€ā€¦ etc.

So how are we to know what information will benefit us most? Who are we supposed to listen to if one account says one thing and another says the opposite? How do we know if that information even applies to us?

I can assure you that working with the proper professionals to assess your problem and devise a plan to help you succeed, is your best option. Someone who knows about YOUR specific problem is going to be able to help you more than any post online.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s some awesome information out there for free but if we’re dealing with a chronic injury, general mobility movements probably won’t solve our problems.

Did you know massage doesn’t have to be painful to be effective?

Holding your breath, guarding an area, tensing up, grunting, squirming away from the pressure… all can be a sign that we may be doing too much.

Be honest with your massage therapist when they ask if the pressure is too much/ not enough.

You don’t have to be a ā€œheroā€ on the massage table!

ā€œIt takes a village.ā€

This phrase usually refers to raising a child but I’m using it for pain relief.

I’ve had back pain for close to 15 years. I’ve tried everything; Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, yoga, acupuncture, reiki, hypnosis (lol what? 😬)…

It’s not that (x) didn’t work for me, it’s that my pain was more complex than any of us realized and I needed a combination of therapies.

It’s taken me almost a decade to start feeling consistent relief. I found people who asked the right questions, assessed appropriately, and provided more than just a hands on approach.

Pain is relative and subjective. It’s different for everyone and based on life experiences. Getting out of pain shouldn’t be a long journey yet for some, it is.

For me, it took a village.

Hi, I’m Tori!
Yes, I’m the owner of Fluid Movement Bodywork but that isn’t my only job.

I am also a Nanny! šŸ‘œ
I’ve been lucky enough to take care of this awesome kiddo for the last year. I spend about 30 hours a week watching him learn, play, and grow and it’s honestly one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had.

Fun tidbit- my grandmother was a live-in nanny for many many years and I vividly remember her talking about her kids every time I would visit. I didn’t understand the connection she had to them then but I certainly do now.

I’m also a doula and mobility coach but the majority of my time is spent working on clients or with this dude. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Fluid Movement Bodywork is 7 months old today! 😳

I’m still not sure what I was thinking starting a business in the middle of a pandemic but I’m grateful she’s surviving and thriving. šŸ„‚

Thank YOU ALL for being a part of it!

Slow, methodical, and meditative.
That’s how I’d describe what I do.

I got into this work because massage was the only therapy that helped me through a decade old injury. Thanks .

Little did I know, working on others would create a space for my mind and nervous system to heal too.

I’m grateful I get to do this work.
