Hi Everyone! Quick Contest Announcement from the Rural Medicine Interest Group 😊

Are you interested in Rural Medicine? Do you love to take pictures? Want to share that beautiful photo from that hike last week? Or a picture of you rocking your rural rotation? Then this is the contest for you! The Rural Medicine Interest Group (RMIG) is hosting a PHOTO CONTEST open to UBC medical students of all years! We want to see photos that represent why you love rural medicine.
How to participate:
Email your photo & a caption (including location) to RMIGphotocontest@gmail.com
**one photo submission per person**
Photos entered will be shared on our FB page
Three Winners will be chosen:
People’s Choice Winner: We will post your photos on our page to be voted on by the public (AKA you students).
Physician’s Choice Winner: Photos will be shared with the Rural Coordination Center of BC to be voted on by Physicians.
Club’s Choice Winner: Members of the Rural Medicine Interest Group will choose a winner.
Prizes:
Each of the three winners will receive a $25 gift card to their store of choice!
Contest Dates:
- Dec. 30th, 2022 - Jan. 30th, 2023 – Contest is OPEN
- Jan. 31st - Feb 10th – Photos will be posted on the FB page and voting will happen

Want to meet others interested in rural medicine, or maybe meet some conference buddies before the R&R Conference? Join our Zoom Speed Friending Night on Thursday, April 13th from 5-6pm Mountain Time! Please RSVP here by Tuesday, April 11th.
A Zoom link will be provided to those that RSVP. For those that sign up, you will get to meet around 10-15 other medical students and residents who share your interest in rural medicine.

uOttawa RMIG is hosting a talk by Dr. Laflèche about the Enhanced Surgical Skills program and working as a GP surgeon in Inuvik and the Norwthwest Territories. This event will take place Monday, March 27 at 6pm EST!
The ESS program is directed towards providing family physicians training in surgical skills to provide a subset of surgical services to remote and underserviced areas. This will be an incredibly interesting and unique talk for those interested in both family medicine and surgery, or who desire a generalist practice and also enjoy procedural skills!

Join the RMIG for our specialties in Rural Medicine Night on March 22nd. During the event we will hear from several specialists about their practice in rural areas. Our wonderful specialist speakers including Dr. Michel Hjelkrem in Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Vanessa Jean Percy in Pediatrics, and Dr. Ian Warbrick in Internal Medicine! The event will take place March 22nd at 7 pm. You can RSVP using the link:

March 22 2023 at 7:00pm on Zoom. Specialists in areas such as internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, and pediatrics will present their journeys to rural medicine and take any questions the audience may have. Join us for a fun and informative night!

Register for the 19th annual Run for Rural Medicine!!

Our in-person 5/10km Run will be hosted on March 11th at Jericho beach, open to all abilities! We are also hosting two weeks of fun virtual challenges, starting Feb 26th, for participants around the country. You can participate in either the in-person event or the virtual challenges, or both! Join for a chance to win fundraising, virtual challenge and in-person door prizes including a BC flight tour for two, Arc’teryx apparel, Lululemon/MEC gift cards any many more!

Register, fundraise, run, and support Hope Air, a Canadian charity that supports access to healthcare by providing travel and accommodations for those in need of medical care far from home. Register as an individual or in teams, with classmates and/or people from outside of medicine. If you would like to support, but do not feel up to registering yourself, you are welcome to donate!

Our wonderful panel will discuss their scope of practice, schedule, finances, lifestyle, and the unique challengers and benefits they experience as rural doctors!

Rural Global Health Partnership Initiative

Deadline: 31-Oct-22

Amount: Up to $10,000

The Rural Global Health Partnership Initiative (RGHPI) offers grants to support projects spearheaded by rural BC physicians or medical trainees and their partners based in underserved communities in BC, other parts of Canada, or internationally. Eligible applicants: BC medical trainees (resident or medical student) with a demonstrated interest in rural medicine and global health. Applicants may apply for grant categories up to $5,000 and $10,000. This support can be applied towards project implementation, licensing fees, travel and living expenses.
