🪷 Dhamma Reflection: The Circle of Water

Friends in the Dhamma,

The Buddha taught us that life flows in cycles, much like the water in nature.

Rain falls from the sky into rivers. Rivers flow into the ocean. The ocean gives rise to clouds. And again, rain returns to the earth.

This is the circle of water. We cannot point to a single drop and say: “This drop has travelled unchanged.” The forms change — cloud, rain, river, sea — yet there is continuity. So too with rebirth in Buddhism: there is a stream of causes and conditions, but no eternal self that travels from life to life.

The Buddha compared it to one candle lighting another. The flame continues, yet it is not the same flame. What continues is kamma, our actions and intentions, bearing fruit in a new existence. But there is no soul, no permanent traveller.
