This wasn't an academic study, but from what I hear from my clients about TikTok advice, it seems accurate. Some highlights:

-83% of videos were found to be misleading.
-45% contained inaccurate info, with 14% containing harmful content.
-9% of content makers had relevant credentials.

-100% of the videos on ADHD had misleading content (with other diagnosis topics not doing much better).

TikTok is increasingly being used as a search engine for all kinds of advice - including mental health.

Though I don’t do Santa Claus with my kids, I think there are ways the concept can either induce shame or confidence in children, depending on how we use it.

Children learn to define themselves according to adult perceptions. If they feel respected and loved by adults, they will come to feel generally lovable, and will love themselves in the healthiest sense. If they think adults think they are bad, stupid, or annoying, they will internalize these traits. They will either develop anxiety about trying to disprove these ideas (which does NOT foster healthy character), or become depressed and angry as they submit to them.

Santa can throw more data into the mix. We introduce someone with the power to judge children as good or bad–and to let them know their goodness or badness through the outcome of Christmas morning...

This post is to help us avoid instilling a totally unnecessary and avoidable dose of childhood anxiety. Though I don’t do Santa Claus with...

Teens and young adults can be deceiving. Often, beneath the facade of carelessness and brazen ignorance, is a deeply pained and mindful soul. Though the brain reaches “adult maturity” around age 25, kids can actually be really smart and long-term thinking when they aren’t stressed. Often more-so than stressed adults.
An issue arises when stressed adults impose their anxieties on their children about college entrance, resumes, providing for a family, considering adults’ emotions, etc. When children are made to worry about things beyond their current developmental abilities, they will become anxious, then often overwhelmed and depressed. THEN, they will act like they don’t know or don’t care about those future concerns to avoid the painful feelings that led to shut down.
So, rather than assume these youth are ignorant and lazy, let’s assume that they are getting flooded, and might need something besides another adult reminder or suggestion right now to meet their needs (maybe love, attention, understanding, real boundaries?).
