The conclusion of the study stated that chronic sinusitis sufferers showed decreased connectivity in the part of the brain that deals with attention and problem solving as well as areas of the brain that manage external stimuli, communication and social behavior. The study showed increased connectivity to the area of the brain linked to self-reference and mind wandering. Still think your stuffy nose is just a stuffy nose?

Several studies in the past 10 years have shown links to mouth breathing and "forward head" posture. Which is when someone's head is more forward than the rest of their body. This posture only gets worse with time. Why? Two main reasons:
1) Mouth breathing causes crooked teeth (see our post on 10/14/21 for a great visual on that). The placement of the teeth determines the position of the jaws, which then determines the placement of the head on the spine, and so on.
2) People who breathe through their mouths tend to hold their head forward to increase their airway space, unconsciously of course.
Myofunctional therapy is a great way to end habitual mouth breathing and retrain one's body to breathe exclusively through their nose. Which is a healthier way to breathe. Eventually the need to hold the head forward to open the airway is decreased and people find that their posture is better as a result. Visit our website or contact us for more information. In honor of opposite day, I am going to share with you some knowledge that is opposite of what we have been told our whole lives. Ready? Ok here it goes....
A lot of us breathe too much. That's right I said it! How many of us sigh (a lot), yawn (more than every now and again), or after that work out when we've really pushed it stop and take in that big deep breath? Guess what you are doing to your body? When we take in big, deep, breaths cause (usually through our mouths) blood vessels to narrow, actually reducing the amount of oxygen that gets delivered to our cells. When we take in too much oxygen, we deplete the amount of carbon dioxide in our body. Carbon dioxide is not a waste gas! Our bodies need carbon dioxide to preform important tasks such as help oxygen offload from the blood to the tissues and organs. So, the next time you want to take that big breath through your mouth, or sigh or yawn; think about it, try to resist, and take a smaller breath through the nose and use your diaphragm!

While the exact relationship between clenching/grinding (AKA bruxism) is not completely understood; they are considered "co-occurrences". Most dental providers and researchers agree that signs of bruxism are cause for more investigation and evaluation for sleep apnea. Studies have shown that at least 1/3 of sleep apnea patients also suffered from bruxism. Have more questions? Reach out to your dentist for answers or visit our website for more information.

Dr. Edward H. Angle (a dentist) published the final revision of his textbook in 1907. In it he describes the role lips and tongues play in "causing and maintaining malocclusion" (crooked teeth) and the need to "overcome" to have success in the treatment of orthodontics. Alfred Rogers is credited with developing corrective exercises to develop coordination and proper muscle function in 1906. The term myofunctional therapy was also coined in the first half of the 19th century. Myofunctional therapy is a time proven therapy to help with all types of dysfunctions of the mouth. Fun fact Friday! Did you or your child go through braces, only to notice that your teeth are moving again?! It may not just be that you (or they) did not wear a retainer. The underlying cause could be the tongue. If the tongue is not functioning right and resting correctly, it could cause issues which can in the end cost you thousands of dollars and years in braces. Myofunctional therapy can help solve this problem! Don't get on the "braces merry go round", contact us for a free evaluation!

Whether we admit it out loud or not, most of us make New Year's resolutions. We want to be healthier, we want to focus on our health, we want to have more energy to play with our kids., or we just want to feel better. Whatever your New Year's resolutions are, myofunctional therapy is a perfect place to start. I can hear the "What?!?" from here. Yes! So many of our barriers to being our best selves can be contributed to dysfunctions in our mouth or face. The expression "Everything starts at the top" is certainly true even with our bodies. Does any of this sound familiar:
*I just can't go to the gym or (insert fitness class here) today I just don't have the energy.
*Ugh! I just can't seem to improve my cardio; I always get so out of breath!
*Geez, my jaw/teeth hurt so bad after I work out!
*I need to go to the doctor; my head hurts every day.
If you can relate to any of the above, you may have a dysfunction that you are not aware of. But don't give up! Myofunctional therapy can help! Contact us for a free consult to see if you can start the journey to being your best self in 2022 with myofunctional therapy!
