Hi everyone! đź’• I wanted to take a moment to share an update from Developing Strides Therapy.

As many of you know, I welcomed twin babies into the world this past December! đź©·đź’™ It has been such a joy (and an adventure!) stepping into this new chapter of motherhood.

With this big life change, I’ve made the heartfelt decision to shift my focus to being a stay-at-home mom to my twins and my almost 4 year old for now. While I’m stepping back from in-home sessions, I’m still available for virtual consults to continue supporting families who may need guidance, resources, or therapy strategies from afar. 💻💙

If you’re interested in scheduling a virtual session or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out — you can call or text me at (908) 227-0352.

Thank you all for your continued support and for trusting me to be part of your children’s journeys. Watching so many little ones grow, learn, and thrive has been one of the greatest joys of my career. 💫

With love,
Alyssa

Technically a day late, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to talk about mental health in pediatrics!

A lot of times we dismiss mental health disorders in children by just saying that they are “acting out” or it’s “behavior.”

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental disorders can begin in childhood. Some examples are anxiety disorders, ADHD, Autism, PTSD, depression, eating disorders, and so many more.

It is important to identify these mental health conditions as they can interfere with the child’s ability to reach their maximum potential.

Mommas… let’s not forget about you this month! It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness month 💖

As much as we put our heart and soul into taking care of our kiddos, we need to be taking care of ourselves too. It is so important to perform self breast exams monthly to be proactive. If YOU are not healthy, you cannot provide adequate care for your child!

Lately I have been having a lot of patients that are right on the verge of independent walking, but they don’t want to let go.

Here are some tips to get your child standing and walking independently:

1. If giving them hand held assistance, try lowering your hands so they are hips height. As parents, we have a tendency to hold the hands above the head and hold up a lot of their weight. Lowering the hands helps them accept more weight in the legs and get a feel for their own balance.
2. Switch to only one hand held support. (Warning! A lot of kids will end up losing their balance and spinning towards you the first few times you try this)
3. Try handing them something large to hold (i.e. beach ball) so they cannot support their hands on a surface.
4. Switch your support to the back of their shirt. This is so the child knows that you are there, but they do not rely on their arms for support.

These are just a few tricks that I have found to be super helpful in my experience. However, every child is different. If your child is not walking independently by 15 months old… it’s time to see a pediatric physical therapist!

If you know me, most of my treatments have a heavy emphasis on strengthening and waking up the core! That’s because the core provides a child with the proximal postural stability needed to develop skills involving the distal extremities. A strong core is needed before children can attain their gross motor, fine motor, speech, and feeding milestones!

Here are a few tips to help your child wake up their core:
1. Get a therapy ball! Then sit your child on top of it and hold them low around the base of their pelvis. Then start by rocking them forwards/backwards, side/side, and around the world. Your child should try to right their trunk towards the center.
2. Also on the therapy ball, practice the transition from laying on the back into sitting. You can assist them by rolling the ball towards you until their have enough strength to bring themselves through the full range.
3. Sit you child on something unstable! This can be a dynadisc, a pillow, or a boogie board in the pool this summer. Have them practice sitting upright on these surfaces without any help.
4. Get your child in a high kneeling position while they play. Have them reach different directions to get different toys and even walk across the room on their knees.

Have fun!
