Most people think ADHD is about attention.
It is not.
At its core ADHD is a dopamine problem.
And understanding that changes everything.
Here is what psychology tells us.
The ADHD brain does not produce or regulate dopamine the same way a neurotypical brain does. Dopamine is the chemical responsible for motivation, focus, reward and follow through.
So when someone with ADHD struggles to start a task, finish a project or stay focused it is not because they are lazy or careless.
It is because their brain is literally not getting the dopamine signal that says this matters, keep going.
This is why adults with ADHD often find themselves:
✦ Hyperfocusing on things they find genuinely exciting ✦ Completely unable to start things that feel boring even when important ✦ Seeking stimulation through conflict, urgency or last minute pressure ✦ Feeling motivated in a crisis but paralysed in calm
Sound familiar?
So what actually helps?
✦ Novelty. The ADHD brain responds to new and interesting. Break tasks into fresh mini challenges. ✦ Body doubling.Working alongside someone else, even virtually, can regulate focus significantly. ✦ Movement before tasks. Physical activity boosts dopamine naturally and primes the brain for focus. ✦ External accountability. Deadlines, check ins and visible progress help the brain stay engaged.
The ADHD brain is not broken.
It is just wired to need more dopamine to engage. And once you understand that you stop fighting yourself and start working with your brain instead.
Does this resonate with you or someone you know? I would love to hear.
