🧾 TA & DA in Indian Pharmaceutical Industry – Survival or Struggle?
Let’s talk about something every field professional in pharma lives through—but few talk about openly: TA (Traveling Allowance) & DA (Daily Allowance).
🚶♂️ In Pharma:
EX Station = Outstation work without stay (return to HQ same day)
OS (OutStation) = Work with stay, because the distance makes same-day return impossible
💸 DA is meant to cover the daily basic expenses during fieldwork—petrol, water, lunch, tea, snacks, parking, etc.
But here's the reality in Indian Pharma today: MRs often get just ₹225 to ₹325/day as DA in HQ (COs 2 COs It'sVary). ASMs might get ₹100 more. RSMs, another ₹100 extra. ZSMs, again ₹100 on top.
🛵 Typical Travel Allowance (EX)- 2.25-3.35 Rupee Per KMs upto 200 KMs (to and fro)-ASM may be 50 Paisa More / KM, RSM another 50 Paisa , ZSM another 50 Paisa.
Even at these roles, field-level spending outpaces the DA, especially during joint field work. Buying tea, snacks, or lunch for self and team or hosting a doctor—it’s tough on this budget.
Now here’s a lesser-known angle 👇
People working at the Head Office level—NSMs, GMs, even Directors—get no fixed TA/DA. Everything is on actual reimbursement, which sounds fair but doesn’t reflect the constant, unaccounted small spends they incur on travel, hosting, team coordination, etc.
👉 Yes, salaries may be higher at HO, but there’s no structured support like field TA/DA for everyday on-ground hustle.
🤔 Is it time we reimagine TA/DA norms to meet today’s ground realities? Can we expect our teams to deliver peak performance while they struggle to survive on such outdated allowances?
Let’s open the floor: 💬 What’s your take on this?
