Often times we feel as if we are on our journey completely alone, and in most respects, we definitely are. However, that doesn't mean that you cannot build a relationship with others who are on similar journeys.

There's a Burkino Faso saying, "Alone a youth runs fast, with an elder slow, but together they go far." The wisdom behind this is that when we are beginning our journey, it is best to equip ourselves with the wisdom of the elders and the vitality and eagerness of our youth if we want to get somewhere. And elders doesn't always mean older people. In some cases, this may mean the wisdom of those who have traveled certain roads, encountered the roadblocks, and figured out how to overcome them. These are the ones who will help guide your way, so that you don't stumble.

There's another saying, “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”

Together these sayings comprise the meaning of Utu or Ubuntu.

I am who I am because of who we all are. We need one another. We are all interconnected and our connectedness requires that we treat each other with kindness, fairness, hospitality, caring, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and goodness. That we build our communities and nations and families with this sense of interconnectedness.

As a someone who has been traveling her spiritual journey for some time and most times alone, I have found myself with this mindset. Every person on a spiritual journey needs at least one of each of the following in their inner circle. Their family. Their community.

A finance expert
A farmer
An herbalist
An astrologer
An alchemist
A mystic
A healer

With these seven, each operating in their respective abilities and gifts, your community will grow and prosper.

There is a saying that states, "one cannot pour from an empty cup." And while this sentiment is true, there remains the fact that one also cannot give to others and have enough for themselves if their cup is only half full. This will cause you to become depleted and without reserves for oneself. Aways remember to keep your cup over flowing. Hold the fullness for yourself and the overflow for others. This way you take care of yourself in such a way that your self care becomes a benefit for others.

To say I have a heritage that is rife with trauma is putting it lightly. I grew up relatively happy as a young child. I didn't really feel the vibrations of hate and discrimination until highschool.

But I was made to know the struggle that my ancestors have had in this country.

My granddaddy's granddaddy was a slave from the Carolinas.

My other grandfather's people fought in the Haitian Revolution.

My grandmother Mary was a proud Choctaw native.

My grandest grandmother Polly was of mixed heritage. She had a mulatto father and her mom, Grandma Emma was also of mixed heritage. Grandma Emma was part of the native tribes that had been sent from arkansas to Texas, where she met Grandpa Milton.

Grandma Amy was Afro Latino from Old Mexico. When my uncle told me about how she was forbidden to speak Spanish in America, it hurt my heart. He told me that she would sneak and teach them Spanish.

I have always only identified with my African Ancestry. It is so hard to talk about having Indigenous ancestry when you look like me.

Some times I feel proud that my grandfathers people were from Haiti and that Grandma Amy was from old Mexico.

I used to show photos of my ancestresses to people to "prove" I have indigenous heritage. It wasnt until a few years ago that I said "F" what other people have to say or what they think.

Ever since I was in highschool I would put down everything on the what is your ethnicity portion of an application.

American Indian ✔️
African/Black ✔️
Hispanic ✔️

But I wanted a box that simply said I was human. Because I am.

If you look at me all you see is "black".

People see my daughters and wonder what they are mixed with. Funny thing DNA. My brother got the lighter skin and sandy hair from my dad's people. As did my children.

All of this to say....

It is Indigenous people's day. I have the privilege of being Indigenous to the Americas and to Africa. I give honor to my Ancestresses who thankfully have transitioned from this plane into a place where they have the freedom to speak their native tongue.
