We’re proud to share that our founder, , has been selected for the 2025 Galaxy Leader Fellowship!

supports leaders who have dedicated their lives to ending our nation’s punitive criminal justice system, and organizations building power and solutions to dismantle systems of oppression, heal our communities, and transform our future.

An eco-womanist abolitionist, mental health equity innovator, and healing justice practitioner, AW’s leadership is rooted in ancestral knowledge, culturally restorative care, and a bold vision for collective healing.

Through the Root Wellness Center, RCC’s sister non-profit, she’s building a world where our communities can thrive in the absence of carceral systems. Through a unique combination of trauma-responsive programming, abolitionist care practices, and culturally grounded mental health interventions, RWC is redefining how marginalized communities access healing, and receive health care.

This fellowship will support her continued leadership development and resource the next phase of the Root Wellness Center’s growth, from a rising movement to a deeply rooted institution.

We give thanks for this recognition and opportunity to expand the work of abolotion and healing.

We believe in movement as medicine, rest as resistance, and wellness as a collective birthright.

This spring, Root Wellness Center’s Whole Body Health program held a cohort that was rooted in rhythm, sweat, and soul.

Participants completed a 12-week journey curated to move mind, body, and spirit.

Together with our visionary partners , we held space for:

🔸Saturday sweat sessions
🔸 Mindful meals and nutrition wisdom
🔸 Goal-setting rooted in purpose
🔸 Mental wellness coaching

This wasn’t your average wellness program. It was a sacred container for community, restoration, and radical joy.

Here’s to moving from surviving to thriving, together. 💪🏾

To the freedom fighters, faith leaders, and community stewards who joined us this season: thank you. You showed up, laid your burdens down, and dared to imagine a different kind of leadership. One that doesn’t cost your spirit.

This cohort reminded us that healing is not a luxury. It’s a right.
When we gather, Black, brave, and unbound, we remember that survival is sacred.

Shoutout to our partners at for helping us hold this sacred space. We’re proud to walk beside leaders who are actively reshaping the world.

We’re already getting ready to welcome the next cohort this summer, and if this one was any indication, the revolution is in good hands.

Juneteenth is not just a history, it’s a frequency.

We celebrate this day because our ancestors dreamed it. We honor them by continuing to choose liberation in all its forms—rest, joy, resistance, love, Black brilliance.

At RCC, we believe our freedom is not a one-time event. It’s a practice, a ritual, and a remembering. Every time we center Black wellness, every time we tell the truth about our pain and our power, we’re living out that legacy.

This month, we hold Juneteenth and Pride together. Because Black freedom includes Black q***r and trans folks. Always has. Always will.

Our pride is sacred. Our freedom is ongoing. Our joy is the revolution. ✊🏾

Last week in Chicago was nothing short of sacred. ✨

Root Cause Collective was honored to serve as healers-in-residence at the Just Impact Conference. We held space for rest, release, and restoration in our wellness room (second slide), where folks could come through to unplug, breathe deep, and get creative.

Deep gratitude to Just Impact for prioritizing healing in the movement and trusting us to steward that space.

Our Founder + Executive Director, AW Shields, facilitated a powerful panel on childhood sexual abuse, holding tender truths and hard conversations with care and clarity. Meanwhile, members of the Root Crew led a mental health workshop centering tools for individual healing in the midst of collective struggle.

We built with abolitionists, educators, organizers, and visionaries all dreaming and doing the work of ending mass incarceration. Every convo, every hug, every sacred exchange, it meant something.

If your org is ready to bring more intention to its wellness journey, know that the Root Cause Collective is here for you. Because yes, the work is important, but we cannot sustain good work when our bodies, spirits, and minds are not well.

To everyone who rolled through the wellness room, came to a workshop, or simply said hey, thank you. We see you. We feel you. We’re ready to build.

Audre Lorde didn’t just write about survival—she demanded it.

She knew that caring for ourselves in a world built to diminish our humanity was a radical act. That’s why Root Wellness Center created Lead Free — a space where movement leaders and community caregivers can access the healing they deserve.

From therapy and retreats to a network of support, Lead Free exists to ensure that those fighting for justice don’t have to fight for their own well-being.

Because you deserve rest. You deserve care. You deserve to be well. 💚

Alice Walker reminds us that “healing begins where the wound was made.” ❤️‍🩹

That’s why Our Ancestors Garden exists—to create spaces where Black families impacted by trauma can reclaim wellness, wisdom, and wholeness.

Through community, education, and care, we equip caregivers with the tools to nurture the next generation with love, liberation, and resilience.

Healing isn’t just about survival. It’s about thriving. It’s about tending to our roots and blooming in our own time.

The beautiful thing about Black history is the rich wisdom of resilience, resistance and joy that lie deep within it.

In the midst of hate, violence, and uncertainty, let us root own and pull from the wisdom of the legacy that runs through our veins. Life, survival, creativity, community, triumph, everything we need in this moment is already within us, our music, our culture, our food, our hair. The pride in knowing this is manifested.

Our communities have never created just to create. We 've created to survive, and we will do it again.

Deep breaths. Root down. We got this.
