5 reasons Yoga asana has not healed your anxiety + nervous system 🧠⚡️

Nervous system regulation requires more than asana.

While this can be a helpful tool, it does not address some very foundational root cause things such as trauma, Inflammation, digestion, LEARNING about your mind and body and how to create balance based on that state and the role they play in NS healing.

It is one piece of the puzzle.. but we need all the pieces working together.

My program Embodied Ayurveda was destined to help you put the pieces together, using Ayurveda, Yoga (beyond asana) and modern science.

Check it out + apply at the link in my bio.. and share this with a teacher/practitioner who needs to hear this!

Here’s why there is NO one size fits all to Nervous System Regulation 🧠⚡️

It is so important to understand, that while the internet is filled with amazing tools, resources and supports for nervous system healing (and even general mental health and wellness information)

There is NO one size fits all approach to this.

While there are certain guiding principles when it comes to regulation, ultimately everyones nervous system is manifesting dysregulation in its own, unique way.

So rather than adopting some one size fits all approach, or throwing spaghetti at the wall and doing we *think* are going to help us.. far more efficient is to really learn about and understand your nervous system.

When we understand how our nervous system is wired, how dysregulation is showing up for us,

And when we pair this with Ayurvedic wisdom and understand the deeper implications from the lens of the Doshas, and Gunas

We are able to create more specific, tailored regulatory practices that are supportive for the way dysregulation is showing up for US!

From that place we can choose the foods, meditations, breath practices, movement practices, daily routines and more that support our unique mind and body.

Cool, right?

This is the work I facilitate within Embodied Ayurveda -my flagship program that goes deeper into the Ayurvedic, Yogic and science backed practices to support and regulate the nervous system.

For a taste of what we do, you can take my free workshop, the chaos to calm masterclass at the link in my bio.

Your morning ritual does not need to be fancy or complex to support your nervous system 🧠⚡️

Waking up at a similar time everyday, brushing your teeth, scraping your tongue and having warm water is enough of a consistent routine to help begin calming your nervous system.

The biggest challenge I see with people when they want to start implementing new routines and rituals is the desire to do at once.

This is actually detrimental because fundamentally the nervous system does not respond well to big change all at once; lots of change, even “good change” feels threatening to the nervous system because it is unfamiliar and overwhelming.

The nervous system craves familiarity, even if that familiarity is not “good” for us. This is why we often go back into familiar unhealthy patterns, because to the nervous system this actually feels “safe.”

What’s familiar is safe in the eyes of the nervous system.

If you want to heal your nervous system start slow and steady. Implement one small change at a time.

Stop looking at what everyone else on the internet is doing, and start tuning into *your* body and mind; do the little things that make *you* feel good. Start where *you* are at, and move slow and steady.

Once you’ve established consistency with these foundations *then* you can add on. Go as slow as you need to, and don’t compare yourself to others. You’re doing amazing.

If you wanna go deeper into creating morning rituals, you can get my “morning routine guide” at the link in my bio.

Share with me in the comments what you’re going to start with; and as always - send this post to a teacher or practitioner who needs to hear this.

5 practices to get you out of your head and into your body 🧠⚡️

When the anxious thoughts feel too much, we can’t always think our way out of anxiety…

Somatic and body based approaches to supporting the nervous system - or what is often called a bottom up approach - can be really helpful.

This is where we use the body and our felt sense to create cues of safety and send that message right along to the brain.

Part of the reason Yoga asana can be so healing (when done appropriately for the individual) is because it connects us with this felt sense, improves neuroception, and can be a beautiful “bottoms up” approach to nervous system regulation.

Here are a few of my personal favourite practices from Ayurveda, Yoga and of course somatic experiencing for when I need to get out of my head.

Let me know which practices resonate and which ones you will try.

I have so much to say on this topic of people pleasing and it’s intersection with the nervous system especially as a recovering people pleaser.

People pleasing, or fawning, is actually a hardwired nervous system response to perceived threat, and a learned behaviour that many adopt in early childhood, or after trauma.

When we experience chaos and conflict growing up; or when we fear our spot in our community group may be threatened or at risk, or when we have experienced trauma, we may learn that the only way to survive or be accepted is to people please.

EVEN if that acceptance comes in the form of our own self-abandonment.

It is a biologically wired survival, and nervous system response. Humans are wired first and foremost for safety, and connection; thousands of years ago we literally would have died if we were not accepted by our community.

Therefore being accepted = survival = we will do literally anything to survive and stay safe.

People pleasing often happens on a subconscious, autonomic nervous system level, so much that we often do not even realise we’ve spent our entire live self-abandoning, people pleasing, and saying yes to things we really don’t want to do, all in an effort to “survive.”

The undoing process is a practice; one that involves both mind-body healing.

It involves first being aware that we are in a fawn/people pleasing state and giving ourselves grace for being there; knowing that this was in fact a survival mechanism.

From that space of awareness, cultivating safety in our body and mind, then taking intentional action to shift out of people pleasing and into our authenticity and truth.

I’ll share more about what this process has looked like, but these affirmations are a great place to start.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but..

Healing takes time.

Nervous system regulation doesn’t happen in a day, or a weekend workshop.

It’s a process - a multidimensional process, and Ayurveda gives us a powerful framework for healing.

If you want to learn more about this process, check out my free workshop - the Chaos to calm Masterclass at the link in my bio.

I’ll help you understand what’s going on from both an Ayurvedic and science based perspective when we feel dysregulated, and share the 3+1 pillars from Ayurveda for self healing.
