My 16 year old daughter Delanie van der Mescht, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in her left pelvis in October 2022. It effected her mobility so she was not able to continue schooling. Was started on 3 weekly chemo regimen and in March 2023 chemo was stopped and radiation was started. In May new scans were done and it was found that the cancer metastasized to her liver, lungs, bones, spine and breasts. Chemo was recommenced again on the old regimen. Treatment is planned according to what medical aid authorizes.
At this stage our oncology benefits for the year are depleted and we have to pay for 20% of all the treatment. Her mobility is severly impaired because of the risk of fracture of her vertebrae and the entire left pelvis being destructed by the primary tumour. She requires full time care and the cost for that is not covered by the medical aid. She is in constant pain and on a intensive pain management regimen.
The plan for surgery will be revisited after chemo is done but the plan is to go to Cape Town later this year for the pelvis reconstruction surgery.
The biggest concern we have now besides keeping her comfortable and pain free is finances. I resigned my permanent job to be more flexible for Delanie and only working agency. Day to day expenses are barely met and medical expenses are all just piling up. We however can not stop fighting for her life only because we can not afford it. So today as a mother, begging for her child I ask to please please help me. Help us. Only if you can.
