We've all heard that the biggest risk with osteoporosis is fractured bones, and we tend to think of this in relation to falls. However, are you aware that osteoporosis puts us at risk of insufficiency fractures? These are much like stress fractures and tend to happen spontaneously, mostly in the spine and/or pelvis of those with osteoporosis. They are extremely painful and debilitating, requiring a long recovery. For this reason, it's very important to be mindful of how you're moving your body once you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Some movements are no longer safe, like bending down to touch your toes or pick something up off the floor, especially if it's something heavy.

Margie Bissinger is a physical therapist who practices functionally and specializes in helping clients manage osteoporosis. Her podcast - Happy Bones, Happy Life - is an excellent resource for those with osteopenia and osteoporosis. In the latest episode, you can hear her answers to some frequently asked questions about exercise/movement, medications, and supplementation. One thing I learned here is that strontium, which is being hailed as a supplement to increase bone density, is actually not all that. Because it replaces calcium in the bones and is heavier than calcium, it gives a false sense of increased bone density. The bones appear more dense on DEXA scans, but the quality of the bone is not improved, which can lead to increased risk of fractures. Check out the episode lnk in the comments.
