September's Water Message - BEAUTY

It's still hot here, but summer vacation is officially over and my kids are back in school. We had an amazing time in Italy and whenever someone asks me what I liked the most about the country, I kept saying Italy is so BEAUTIFUL. The land was beautiful, the culture, the art, the food, and the experience was just BEAUTIFUL. I'm someone who definitely tries to live the BEAUTY WAY - always looking for the BEAUTY. That's not to say that I don't also see the ugliness in life and know that there's so much hardship and suffering all around me and in the world.

We are all a complex mix of contradictions. Because even though I look for the BEAUTY, I know I also have a tendency to focus on the negative, and what is wrong, and what is not working. I can empathize with so many of my patients about how we can get stuck in our own heads and sabotage a situation just through our own negative thinking. I can make something a bigger problem than it is. Rather than focusing my energy and attention on something and labelling it as negative, I can acknowledge a challenge and try to reframe it in a more positive light, finding the BEAUTY in any situation, because it's always there.

I know it's hard to do so though when we are constantly weighed down by life's challenges. Part of the BEAUTY of working with water as an ally is that water can support us in carrying life's challenges so that the load doesn't feel as heavy. We can let water help us do the heavy lifting and surrender to the natural way that water moves in the world.

September's water message of BEAUTY:

Water is beautiful. In all its shapes and forms. No one can deny the beauty of water. You are beautiful. Nature is beautiful. When you can see the beauty all around you, and inside of you, you are living the Beauty Way. The Beauty Way is not about turning a blind eye to what is ugly or unpleasing to the senses. It is about being able to find the beauty in even the most difficult and challenging circumstances.

Our planet is a place of beauty. It would be difficult to go through an entire day and not be able to find beauty in the color of the light, the movement of the wind, a flower, a smile, the sound of laughter, the taste of fruit. The more we can see the beauty of life, the more beautiful our life becomes.

August's Water Message - LOVE

Where did this summer go?! Was it just me, or did this summer seem to fly by faster than usual? It's already August, and I'm not quite ready to dive back into school yet. Thankfully, our family has one more big trip to Italy this month to play in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea before my kids head back to school in the fall.

When I saw the card and message for this month - LOVE - I could feel my body exhale a sigh of relief. LOVE is a universal vibration that lets us all relax into our natural state of being, a state of LOVE. If there's one card in the Wisdom of Water Oracle card deck that can always be the answer to any question you ask it, this is the card. Because no matter what question you ask of life, whether it's - What should I be focusing on right now? Or what is the right course of action? Or what guiding principle or insight can water give me for a challenging situation I am facing? - LOVE is always the answer.

Even though LOVE is our natural state, LOVE doesn't always mean taking the easy path forward. LOVE sometimes requires us to do hard things and face difficult truths, but if LOVE is your North Star and guiding compass, then you will know that your life is always heading in the direction of deeper and deeper love, which is your true nature.

August's water message of LOVE:

Water is pure love. When you look at water and see love, then you can see that you are love reflected back on itself. You can feel the love that resides in every one of your water-filled cells. Your entire body is a vessel of love. You are an embodiment of divine love. When you drink in water that sustains your life, you are drinking in the love that life is supplying you with every day. Water is love. You are love. Life is love.

July's Water Message - PLAY

Somehow June has already slipped away, and summer is beckoning us to play with her before she leaves for another season. When my kids were young, they always wanted me to play with them, and I have some sadness and regret in my heart that I didn't always have the time or energy to say yes. And now that my kids are teenagers, I feel like I'm always the one asking them to spend time with me, and they aren't always as eager to, or as available, as they were when they were younger.

I have compassion for myself that I was doing the best I could, having young children while still navigating my medical training years, and how tired and exhausted I was. But I also acknowledge that play hasn't always come easy for me. Even though it's the most natural thing for a child to do, play was not something valued or nurtured in my ancestral lineage. Hard work and survival were more prominent concerns. I have compassion for my parents and ancestors who weren't given much opportunity to play either.

That is why July's water message of PLAY feels like medicine to me. I love playing, but I still sometimes don't know how, or it takes me some time to settle into a playful space and energy to really relax and let myself PLAY. The magic of water is that it helps me to access my playful self. Water reminds me that PLAY is important, PLAY is healing medicine, and PLAY can be simple, joyful, and pleasurable.

July's water message of PLAY:

Water is playful. Water wants us to play. Our natural desire to play awakens when we are around and in water. Water helps us to tap into our inner child. We come through life in water and water reminds us of our earliest beginnings of home and safety. Splash around, dive in, kick, turn, flip, swirl. Delight in the simple joy of playing in water. The point of play is to enjoy yourself, to have fun. As you play, your nervous system relaxes and you access natural states of joy and pleasure. Play is good for your health, creativity, and productivity. This is your true nature. When you forget to play, you forget one of the natural properties and expressions of water.

June's water message CREATION:

The image of the CREATION card is one of the most powerful and activating energy transmissions in our deck. You can just feel the power of the light and water beaming out of the card into you, to activate your own creative powers. We ALL are CREATIVE beings, but we need to get in touch with our CREATIVITY and nurture and support it as a healing force in our lives. Being CREATIVE doesn't mean you have to paint or write or be musical, it means honoring that you have the ability to CREATE whatever you want in your life. Whatever your heart is longing for, you can CREATE it with the power of your imagination and the perseverance of your actions.

‘’The living energy of the sun meeting and harmonizing with the living energy of water, where the two meet, is what creates life: the point of creation.” - Inca tradition

Where the light within you meets with the water inside of you is what creates life. You are a vessel for sacred creation. Water is naturally creative. It is constantly creating new shapes, forms, expressions, carving through landscapes, falling, flowing, forming and reforming. The nature of water is to constantly create and nourish new life. The same is true of your own creative expression. When your waters are flowing, you will be constantly creating and expressing yourself, even if it is just how you choose to dress, or fill your day. At other times, it may be more organized works of creative expression that want to be channeled through you. When you think that there is no point to creative play and expression, be reminded that creativity in and of itself is a healing process. This card is inviting you to honor yourself as a creative being. Let your creative waters be stirred, and your creations flow into the world.

As a therapist, I help my patients find the words to make sense of their experiences. Similarly, as a writer, I use words to create stories that people can see themselves and their journeys in.

When I get to combine my skills as a therapist and writer to co-create a collective narrative that can help my Vietnamese diaspora community heal from the generations of unspoken loss, trauma, and grief that lives on in our bodies and are ready to be released, I tap into the healing power of creativity and story-telling.

It was a true creative and therapeutic honor to be a part of this podcast episode honoring the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam war that highlights how the Vietnamese community is beginning to break the silence around mental health and how this will have ripple effects on multiple generations.

May's Water Message - LET IT IN

One of the most challenging lessons that I'm still learning and practicing in life is how to let in the things that I want most. I long for connection and social support, but my innate introversion and shyness has created a protective shell around me that's hard to crack. I long for ease and less anxiety, but I also carry a life-long pattern of over-thinking and over-preparing that in some ways has served me so well that it's hard to let go of.

But when I look at the image of this month's water oracle card Let it In captured by artist Sarah Impey, I see an angel spreading her wings and letting in angelic light and assistance from magical and divine realms. It's effortless. Maybe one of the reasons why it's been so hard for me to let go of some of my most deeply held patterns is because I have this belief that I have to work really hard to accomplish the hard stuff. There's a part of me that doesn't trust that I can just relax into my natural self and let in everything I want. This is an image and message that I need to come back to time and time again to learn to relax my tension and let it in. You can practice this as well by looking at the image of the card below and just letting the energy of the image enter your body of water and work its magic on you. There's nothing you have to do besides LET IT IN. Let in whatever you want and need in your life.

May's water message of LET IT IN:

Water is all around us. Love is all around us. Support is all around us. But sometimes we need assistance with letting it in, trusting that our needs are real, and that they can be met by the support all around us. Asking for support, opening yourself to receive it, and then letting it in is an act of trust. Water will flow where there is an opening, but it can’t be forced to enter until there is space for it to flow in.This card is inviting you to reflect if there are areas in your life that you would like more support in, but you haven’t been able to open yourself to let it in yet. Soften, relax, trust, release, let it in.

April's Water Message - REBIRTH

In these uncertain times, there is a comfort in knowing that there are certain cycles in life and nature that keep on going, despite everything that is going on in the world. Yes, global warming and climate change is massively affecting predictable weather and seasonal patterns, but spring is here in the Northern Hemisphere and spring is a time of REBIRTH.

There are two things that you can be certain of in this life. You are born, and then you will die. In between your first and last breath on this Earth, you will go through many death and rebirth cycles. You will lose loved ones, you will say goodbye to younger versions of yourself, you will let go of places, experiences, homes, jobs, ideas, and stories about your life. But you will also open up to new experiences, new relationships, new versions of yourself, and new life. Each day when you go to sleep, you go through a mini death and a mini rebirth when you wake back up. The more deeply you can embrace this universal principle of life and death, the less suffering you will experience by clinging to attachments that need to die. Of course, you will need to grieve all these deaths and losses. That is not easy.

But know that after every death, there is a rebirth. Give yourself time, space, and permission to be reborn every day and every chapter of your life, until you reach death's door again. Buddhists often refer to this concept as impermanence, an understanding that nothing lasts, that we are constantly cycling through death and rebirth. Like water, let life flow through you, and don't cling too tightly to anything because it will keep changing. You can't grasp water in the palm of your hand, but you can feel the strength and vitality of its life force passing through your open hand.

April's water message of REBIRTH:

Spring always comes after winter. After a time of darkness and grief, be reassured that spring and rebirth always follow. This card honors and acknowledges that you have been through a period of loss, darkness, loneliness, uncertainty about the future, and despair about whether the light will ever come. This card is here to reassure you that you have served your time of grief. Rebirth is here. Welcome new life, welcome the light, it is here for you.

March's Water Message - DIVINE MAGIC

Spring is just around the corner and I can sense it in the mornings when it gets lighter just a little earlier than the previous week, or when I walk around the neighborhood and see the plum blossoms flowering and the green buds pushing through the Earth's soil. Nature is waking up again after its winter slumber.

This being human journey is quite a ride. Sometimes it feels like I'm just going through the motions of ordinary life to keep up with tasks like laundry, grocery shopping, and shuttling my kids back and forth from their sports and extracurricular activities. And then there are DIVINE MAGICAL moments in ordinary life, like right now, as I am sitting and observing how the sunlight dancing off the quivering green leaves of the rose bush in front of my office window makes my body want to quiver and twinkle back. There are the DIVINE MAGICAL moments when a hummingbird hovers in front of my nose and stares into my eyes, or when a friend I've been thinking of reaches out and lets me know that they were thinking of me at exactly the same time. Everything on this Earth and Universe is connected. It's all DIVINE, even the mundane ordinary moments. Can you slow down and take in life in this precious body as DIVINE MAGIC?

This month of March, when we celebrate both the Spring Equinox on March 20 and World Water Day on March 22, let's try to be mindful of what a DIVINE MAGICAL world we live in, and let us use water to help us remember that. Every time you make contact with water this month, remind yourself of the DIVINE MAGIC that is all around you and inside of you at all times.

March's water message is DIVINE MAGIC:

Water is a gift from the Divine. Water is a magical force that casts a spell of enchantment all around it with its beauty and awe inspiring abilities. And yet, unlike other divine magical creations like rainbows and sunsets, water is something you can touch, hold, taste, and play with that is a constant reminder that the Divine is real and here with you right now. If you doubt whether you live in a Divine magical world or not, water reminds you that life is Divine and magic is real. Your life is a magical gift from the Divine, just like water.
