First responders (law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS personal) are facing increasing stressors in their profession. There are increasing challenges with the workload and workplace, increasing responsibility both real and perceived, increasing accountability and expectations, and increasing problems within the communities they serve…
This leads to high impact stressors such as trauma exposure, relational engagement challenges, chronic perpetual stress, burnout, health concerns, and much more.
Stigma surrounding mental health support remains a significant barrier despite some who say it is not including the professions stating ‘we talk about mental health, support is available’.
Talking about mental health and wellness briefly, or having it ‘available’, is not the same thing as embracing mental health and wellness as critical to the professions success. It is also not the same thing as creating safe access and supportive encouragement for those who do chose to access it.
Mental health and wellness requires action on both the employer and employees side.
