What is the hype about flat feet or the buzz word "overpronated" ?
It’s the mechanical movement in which the inside of the foot falls or rolls in. Pronation is normal and a part of the gait cycle.
However, kiddos and even adults can have excessive pronation. This can lead to other musculoskeletal concerns such as developmental delay, abnormal gait, and even pain or postural abnormities further up the kinetic chain (him, knee, back, etc).
The arches of your child's foot will develop around the age of 6 and should not typically be a concern prior to this unless they have an abnormal gait, complain of pain, or are delayed in a gross motor skill.
Note that not all flat feet will lead to these concerns, and each case should be considered independently. Consult your pediatric or even adult physical therapist if you have concerns regarding your or your child's feet and other areas of pain.
