I am looking forward to meeting everyone next week at An Sanctoir. The first 2 days will be foundations, and then we will explore a little deeper.

To do the foundations in anything less than 3-5 years would be a tall order but hey, let’s begin. These days will give everyone an opportunity to find out whether the art of Nei gong is something you want to explore.
Very much looking forward to being an Ireland again 🦚

The Nine Heart Palaces - Jiu Xin Gong (九心宮)

This post is a little longer than usual, and is still a very brief introduction and overview of what are known as the ‘Nine Heart Palaces’ - I hope some may find the post helpful and interesting enough to begin exploring this construct when identifying the nature(s) and causes of emotional and mental distress...

The Nine Heart Palaces within Chinese medicine are essentially nine key areas of someone’s life that a classical doctor may explore in order to identify certain emotional and mental issues. If there is indeed an issue with one of the ‘palaces’, it is said to become a ‘Heart pain (Xin Tong, 心痛)’ - this is seen as a potential root for mental discomfort, and will need to be addressed in order for the patient to recover. The Nine Heart Palaces are as follows:

1. Health - the health palace is not necessarily about being in good health or ill health, it’s about whether or not one’s health causes mental distress. It is more commonly out of balance when one has a chronic illness, though any over attachment to health can cause it issue. When this palace is stable, a patient can be quite unwell but be detached enough to not experience distress.

2. Abundance - Sometimes known as the ‘wealth’ palace, it is associated with the act of acquiring and being comfortable with what we have. It does not necessarily mean being ‘financially’ rich, as wealth is relative and subjective. Though it is about the feeling of being satisfied with what you have in life. This is linked to the Yi and the Earth quality, and imbalance often causes issues with clarity of thought and digestion.

3. Prosperity - this palace is linked to the Fire quality and the Du channel. It is associated with being able to give, and having enough to offer and provide. As with abundance, it does not only relate to materialistic belongings, but also the ability to have enough Qi and stability to give energetically and emotionally.

4. Relationships - this palace is associated with having relationships that allow and assist us to progress and learn throughout life, as opposed to simply feeling loved or needed. It is linked to the Heart Shen and the Fire quality. It should be noted that it is not only about being in a relationship or having enough social relationships... Being alone for certain periods may indeed be needed to progress and learn certain lessons. This palace is often disordered due to putting others’ needs first.

5. Creativity - this palace is associated with having purpose and creating something that gives our lives meaning. It is again closely linked to the Heart Shen, and the Fire quality.

6. Adventure - having adventure in life is linked closely to the Wood quality and the Hun, which requires the potential to experience new things in life rather than the feeling of stagnation and mundanity. Much like abundance, what gives a sense of adventure is relative to the individual.

7. Career - this is not only associated with having a career or occupation that we necessarily enjoy, but our ability to find our vocation in life. It is important that it matches our life path and that we have the requirements to engage with it based on our congenital constitution. It would not be good for instance if we felt the need to perform to a crowd and be among others, but were in a career that involved isolation (or vice versa).

8. Sanctuary - some refer to this as home or family, though not having a home or family is also considered ok so long as the person is comfortable with that. It is essentially a place (physically or psychologically) that one can feel rooted and safe in. It’s the aspect of the mind that feels comfortable to let down it’s guard at times and feel at rest. This is associated with the Kidneys and Zhi.

9. Wisdom - this correlates with our self-reliance and acceptance for who we are. It is linked to our understanding of situations, our adaptability, and ability to go with the flow. This palace often only becomes harmonised once the others are settled.
