An innovative concept for clean air by Studio Symbiosis

More than 99% of people living in urban areas breathe air with pollution levels above the limits set by the WHO.

Air pollution has become a serious health hazard - a hazard that the architect’s architectural office Studio Symbiosis is tackling with great innovation.
The studio that has created many award-winning designs now presents VERTO, a design that has not only won the Red Dot and the German Design Award but that could also provide a sustainable solution to the problem of air pollution.

“VERTO is a multi-directional, 360-degree air filtration tower that we have developed with German filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL for a cleaner, healthier future. It cleans the air of the ultra fine particles that are harmful to human health (PM 2.5, PM 10, NO2),” explains Britta Knobel Gupta, founding partner of Studio Symbiosis. She adds: “By the way, VERTOs name says it all. It derives its name by ‘to turn’ as as the tower rises, it transforms the polluted air in the area into clean air.”

VERTO is designed according to the principles of aerodynamics and can clean 700,000 m3 of air per day - the volume of 322 hot-air balloons. The air is drawn in by energy-efficient fans and filtered by fine dust filters. “A specially designed control system allows for demand-driven operation depending on the level of pollution”, closes Britta Knobel.
