It was the second time since becoming a mother that I didn’t make Thanksgiving dinner. Lucky me, had my talented nephew whip us up an amazing feast in his new home and then we watched the Cowboys win, and it rocked!

The weekend following was filled with snuggles and books, marionettes and Santa with tons of Aunt Jenn and Arlo time and a sprinkle of some (not so) little White girls (Jillian not pictured) too!!

The trip home led us straight into a magnificent sunset that just kept hanging on and on and on. When I arrived back in Sunbury I was met by a quiet street and Christmas lights to welcome me home. An almost perfect end to November.

One of my favorite parts of bread making is watching something so shaggy and messy transform into a soft smooth ball simply by pulling and kind of beating it up a little. All while allowing time for it to rest and recover.

What happens next you may ask? Now it gets lots of hours to take that strength and structure provided which allows it to grow and grow and grow into some soft and pliable but able to maintain the shape it’s intended to have.

**not the same doughs in these pics but the results are always the same no matter what color, flavor or type it is**

Seems pretty metaphorical huh?

Little lessons from the kitchen - My Nanny tried to teach me how to roll a good circle but I definitely never mastered it! Lattice top to the rescue!

Last week I mistakenly brought home apples and found half a drawer full when I went to put them away so I knew I needed to make something with those older Cortlands. Then I was cleaning my pantry shelf and found a partial box of a Trader Joe’s treat kit that some of the ingredients got used for a different purpose but there were caramels and big chocolate chips so a chocolate salted caramel apple pie it was!

I was able to use almost all of the remaining lard from our camper fridge to make my own crust, which although was far from pretty it tasted much better than I projected it would. 😂

As I used up all the “forgotten ingredients” turning them into something new, it made me realize the big downside I found with making so much out of my sourdough starter, and that is that I can’t eat any of the raw dough!! And I LOVE raw dough!

Yesterday I also made some (big brother requested) white chocolate chip cranberry macadamia nut cookies and let’s just say I had my fair share of raw cookies and pie crust scraps. But if that was sourdough??? Nope, that would not have happened! I learned that lesson early into my sourdough journey. lol

Are you part of the raw dough club or do you think that’s nuts??

Both my husband and my nephew sent me the recipe from for a sourdough croissant loaf so of course I had to give it a go. Today was go round number 3, and it sure looks pretty darned perfect!

It has been such a fun year of adventures in sourdough since creating my starter, Ronnie back in September 2024. I feel like I have the basics pretty down pat after a number of struggles and challenges, and I am super pumped for all the fun things I want to tackle next.

For any friends who want to or have started to dabble in the overwhelming world of sourdough, just keep tweaking, and trying and don’t give up! Even a bad loaf of homemade bread is sooooo much better than the crap you can buy in the store!

It was a 21-hour day that started at 6AM, followed by an awesome work party and fun group costume adventure, baking time after work where I made one of the biggest loaves of sourdough ever, then a quick trip for me and Cole to Philly, where this Sugar Mama and Jelly Roll joined our host Andy Dewire and hostess Aelys for a decked out fantastical world party, some delicious tequila made right here in good ol’ PA, an amazing charcuterie, my homemade bread and good old fashioned Halloween fun with someones I love and more!

I got zero pictures during the actual soiree, but I did make it until the last guest left when I laid my smiling head down at 3:15 am; and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Doing a little experimenting for an upcoming bread commission request. First take at a pumpkin shaped loaf was not quite a success but definitely not a failure. I think it needs a little scoring at the center to prevent some of the sections from exploding like this one did. 🎃
