Identifying potential substance use in a friend requires observing a persistent and noticeable pattern of changes, not just a single incident. The key signs often fall into three main categories: behavioral, physical, and psychological alterations.
Here are the most common signs you can look for are:
- Drop in grades: A sudden and significant drop in grades, frequently missing school or classes, or a loss of interest in activities, sports, or hobbies they once enjoyed.
- Bloodshot eyes: Eyes may be bloodshot, glazed, or watery, and pupils might be constricted (pinpoint) or dilated (larger) than normal.
- Unexplained marks: Watch for unexplained sores around the mouth, burns on the fingers, or small, concealed marks (from needles) on arms or legs.
- Mood swings: Sudden, unexplained changes in personality or attitude, including becoming irritable, hostile, unusually angry, or uncooperative.
