For those who are unaware as to what I’m referring to, made a statement about Trump on live TV yesterday that was subsequently caricatured by , both versions going viral on Twitter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
May I remind you, yet again, that the perpetuation of weight stigma leads to real and identifiable harm to fat people. Sharing caricatures of Trump as an ob*se turtle doesn’t make you big or clever, it just hurts fat people in your life that see it, whether it’s internalised or not.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of making excuses for it, just call it out. It’s incredibly simple. No ifs or buts.

Concern trolling fat people about health to derail us from discussing the effects of fatphobia is harmful and further perpetuates weight stigma. If your worries about the health of fat people are not focused on the pervasive effects that weight stigma has on the physiology of fat bodies, the way fat people experience healthcare, and the overall quality of life of fat people, then you are not actually worried about the health of fat people.

Health is so much more than the size or shape of our bodies. So many things impact our health and many are beyond our individual control.
Social determinants of health such as, access to medical care, access to fresh fruits and vegetables, safe neighborhoods, socioeconomic status, race, culture, ability access, mental health. age, gender etc.... all impact health and well-being. Not everyone has complete physical health. Assuming people have complete control over their physical health is ableist and perpetuates healthism. If we take a more expansive view of health, rugged individualism and bootstrap theory falls very short. What contributes to a sense of well being for you? How could community support you better to improve your sense of well being?

Diet culture will have you believe that excess weight is solely to blame for poor outcomes seen more frequently in fat folks than thin folks. 😑 However, emerging literature shows that weight stigma—the discrimination and abuse that fat people face from society—is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes. 🤔
According to Emmer, Bosnjak, and Mata (2019), “weight stigma is associated with a range of adverse mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, psychological distress, dysfunctional and disordered eating, and decreased quality of life, self-esteem, and body satisfaction.”
If you care about the health of fat folks, unpack your internalized fatphobia and start treating us with the same respect you give thin individuals.

“It takes effort and may feel unnatural, but parents can help their children develop healthy body attitudes by putting in the work to unlearn many of their own attitudes, beliefs, biases and behaviors when it comes to food, weight, body image, health and exercise.”

Parents' personal comments can send harmful messages about body image.

Where does our preference for thinness really come from? As Sabrina Strings explains in her book, Fearing the Black Body, the answer is much more complicated than health or aesthetics. She argues the origins of modern day fat phobia can be traced all the way back to slavery, and Black people are sti...
