Scoliosis Providers, you may want to save this one for later !

A question I get often surrounds what precautions PTs should take in PT for scoliosis if the patient is hypermobile. Well generally, it’s really not so black and white, but here are the general guidelines I recommend specifically relating to passion traction, an important part of scoliosis specific physical therapy.

And on this topic…If you’re reading this, have you been diagnosed with…

I notice sometimes the topic of upper cervical instability comes up and people just automatically assume it means worse case scenario and surgery might be needed. Of course there are surgical cases, and having that surgery is life changing! But most cases are not to that point. We need to recognize the spectrum that exists as well as the fact that PT can be huge when done right.

Does the thought of having upper cervical instability make you nervous?

Upper cervical instability has been a theme in the clinic this week, so I figured I’d highlight some of my top tips when introducing something like the infamous chin tuck.

Has this PT exercise ever made your symptoms worse? (you’re not alone)

Obviously we want to, and SHOULD, feel heard by every doctor we see. But we also know that’s just not how it works. Especially if you are living with chronic pain, and even more specifically with EDS/HSD.

My advice is to set expectations before your appts. If you have built rapport with certain doctors on your team, than you know you’ll consistently feel heard by that doctor. We SHOULD feel heard by every doctor we see, but we also don’t need to in order to move forward in our care.

Doctors hold a lot of power in their role, but we can hold the power by not letting them lead us to second guessing ourselves when it’s not a good fit.

Of course the real answer is let’s keep working. Keep educating, raising awareness, never settling etc. but not so in a way that sacrifices our energy.

About PT & Pilates with Dr. Kate

Hi! My name is Kathryn Bacigalupo, PT, DPT, but you can call me Kate. I graduated with my doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University in 2015. Since graduating, I have worked in a family-run outpatient orthopedic setting and have helped hundreds of patients achieve their goals. I most recently started working on my Pilates certification through BASI Pilates and have become fascinated by the potential of blending PT & Pilates.

When I was laid off in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis, I decided to take advantage of the situation to learn more about Telehealth and Cash-Based Physical Therapy. I've discovered the overwhelming potential of using this platform and am eager to now begin this new endeavor.

I am excited to see the success stories that form using the power of technology without the red tape that insurance brings. I am eager to provide you with personalized physical therapy consultations and treatments from the comforts of your homes, so what are you waiting for? Contact me at KBacigalupo.PT@gmail.com to learn more and get started.
