Board member and advocate, Rachel Ransbottom, got the opportunity to attend the Ohio Association of County Boards of DD Annual Conference this week! Rachel represented the Board at the Delegate Assembly, where she approved the new Board representatives and received updates on OACB’s efforts this year.

During the annual conference, Rachel also learned all about leadership, networking, advocacy, and how she can connect more with advocates from Ohio who are leading the way in their counties, like Rachel! We are so lucky to have Rachel on our Board!

As we head into Thanksgiving, remember that not everyone experiences the day the same way. For many individuals with sensory sensitivities, large gatherings, unfamiliar foods, and loud environments can feel overwhelming. Here are a few simple ways to make the holiday more comfortable and joyful for everyone:

- Create a quiet space — Set up a calm area where anyone can take a break.
- Give a heads-up — Share the day's schedule or meal plan in advance to ease uncertainty.
- Lower the noise — Use soft music, dim lighting, or noise-reduction tools when possible.
- Offer familiar options — Include foods or activities that feel safe and comforting.
- Respect boundaries — Let people choose if they want hugs, conversation, or space.

This Thanksgiving, let’s celebrate gratitude with inclusion, understanding, and sensory-friendly support!

When BCBDD Community Connection Coordinators Jenny Mann and Lynn Goodwin saw a Facebook photo showing New Life Mission’s food pantry shelves nearly empty, they immediately felt that they had to do something to help. New Life Mission in Hamilton, Ohio, is a resource hub, food pantry, and meal center that not only serves the Hamilton community but also supports a large number of individuals and families we serve!

In support of New Life Mission, Jenny and Lynn asked our staff to help them collect non-perishable food items for New Life Mission's pantry. The response from our staff was incredible! Yesterday, Pastor Felix from New Life Mission picked up a large donation barrel filled with food items and other donations made by our staff!

Thank you to all those who helped Jenny and Lynn fill the barrel and support a community resource that does so much for those we serve!

At the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities, we see kindness in action every day through the smiles, support, and friendships that build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Here are a few ways you can show kindness today:
- Say hello to someone new.
- Offer help to a neighbor or coworker.
- Send a message of encouragement.
- Compliment someone sincerely.
- Include others, especially those who may feel left out.
- Smile, it’s contagious!

Let’s continue to lead with compassion and celebrate the power of kindness in every interaction!

Nolan had a wonderful experience getting his haircut from a famous disability advocate and barber influencer, Vernon Jackson, creator of the non-profit The Gifted Event, a free haircut program for children with special needs and their families. The Gifted Event's mission is to make barbershops and salons a safe and inclusive space for neurodivergent children and their families. Vernon has been featured on Good Morning America, Today Show, CBS News, Fox News, and has 1.1 million followers on TikTok.

Nolan and his great-grandmother were able to get an appointment at Noble Barber and Beauty with Vernon, and Nolan had an unforgettable time! Nolan previously struggled with haircuts, but according to Nolan's great-grandmother, he did very well with Vernon because Vernon was so patient with him! Nolan did so well that his great-grandmother scheduled another appointment!

Thank you so much, Vernon, for giving Nolan such a phenomenal haircut experience! To learn more about Vernon Jackson and the Gifted Event, visit his website: https://thegiftedevent.com/.
