An amazing story on *Marvan Attapattu, a Chartered Accountant & a Srilankan Cricketer.*

It’s a story that Harsha Bhogle loves to tell, over and over again.

Making his debut in Test cricket for Sri Lanka, Marvan scored a duck in his first innings. And again, in his second innings.

They dropped him. So he went back to the nets for more practice. More first-class cricket. More runs. Waiting for that elusive call.

And after twenty-one months, he got a second chance.

This time, he tried harder. His scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second Dropped again, he went back to the grind. And scored tonnes of runs in first-class cricket. Runs that seemed inadequate to erase the painful memories of the Test failures.

Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again. Marvan got to bat in both innings of the Test. His scores: 0 and 0. Phew!

Back to the grind. Would the selectors ever give him another chance? They said he lacked big-match temperament.

His technique wasn’t good enough at the highest level. Undaunted, Marvan kept trying.

Three years later, he got another chance. This time, he made runs. He came good. And in an illustrious career thereafter, Marvan went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included *sixteen centuries* and *six double hundreds* .

And he went on to captain his country. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket. Wow ! What a guy!

How many of us can handle failure as well as he did ? Six years of trying, and failing. He must have been tempted to pursue another career. Change his sport perhaps. Play county cricket. Or, oh well, just give up. But he didn’t. And that made the difference.

The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection, think of Marvan.

One more thing, Marvan Attapattu is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

*The man and the candle*

An interesting story about
a small candle carried by a man
who was climbing the stairs of a lighthouse.

On their way up to the top
the candle asked the man,
"Where are we going?"

"We're going to the top of this lighthouse
and give signals to the big ships on the ocean,"
the man answered.

"What? How could it be possible for me
with my small light to give signals
to those big ships?"

"They will never be able to see my light",
replied the candle weakly.

"That's your part.
If your light is small, let it be.
All you have to do is keep burning
and leave the rest to me",
said the man.

A little later,
they arrived at the top of the lighthouse
where there was a big lamp
with a loop behind it.
Then the man lit the lamp
with the light of the candle and instantly,
the place shone so brightly
that the ships on the ocean could see its light.

Even a small person can bring big changes in the world.

*Become a Lake*💧
🍁The old Zen Master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it. "How does it taste?" the Master asked. "Terrible," replied the boy.

The Master then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the guy swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man said, "Now drink the water from the lake."🍁

🍁As the water dripped down the young man's chin, and the Master asked, "How does it taste?" "Good!" remarked the boy. "Do you taste the salt?" asked the Master. "No," said the young man.

The Master sat beside this troubled young man, took his hands, and said," The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same but the amount we taste the 'pain' depends on the container we put it into.🍁

🍁So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things.....

Stop being a glass. Become a lake! Failure doesn't mean when we fail, but when we don't want to come up again.🍁

🍁 *Learning*: What is required is to change our paradigm and make a shift in our focus. Too often we are more focused only on the pain, and miss out on the gain.
