In Australia Chlorpyrifos is used on a wide variety of conventional crops including apples, oranges, strawberries, corn, wheat, citrus, broccoli, melons asparagus, walnuts, onions, grapes, cherries, cauliflower
and other foods families and their children eat daily (thankfully you want find Chlorpyrifos on Certified Organic.)
Chlorpyrifos can permanently damage the developing brains of children, causing reduced IQ, loss of working memory, and attention deficit disorders and yet it is still legally allowed to be placed on conventional food in Australia 😳
Chlorpyrifos (CPS), also known as Chlorpyrifos ethyl, is an organophosphate pesticide that has been used on crops, animals, and buildings, and in other settings, to kill a number of pests, including insects and worms. Chlorpyrifos is designed to kill insects by blocking an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme normally breaks down acetylcholine, a chemical that the body uses to transmit nerve impulses. Blocking the enzyme causes insects to have convulsions and die. All organophosphate insecticides are also toxic and potentially lethal to humans.
Before the ban in U.S. for residential application over 75% of people in the U.S. still have traces of chlorpyrifos in their bodies, mostly due to residues on food. Higher exposures have been documented in farm workers and people who live or work near agricultural fields.
In 2016 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a revised human health risk assessment for chlorpyrifos in 2016 that confirmed that there are no safe uses for the pesticide. EPA found that all l food exposures exceed safe levels, with children ages 1–2 exposed to levels of chlorpyrifos that are 140 times what EPA deems safe.
In Australia there are 135 products with chlorpyrifos use currently registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and has been subjected to several reviews and the only win is that it has been banned for residential use in Australia but conventional farming are still able to put it on their crops to kill insects..... and you... and just remember this is how conventional farmers can produce cheap fruits & vegetables that look perfect and show no evidence of pest.
The only way to avoid this toxic chemical in Australia is to grow your own food or eat Certified Organic.
