To ensure safe water and sanitation in areas heavily affected by the recent earthquakes, the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) through the Provincial Health Office (PHO) has ramped up its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) operations across the province.
In partnership with Davao Center for Health Development WASH Team, Lupon, Davao de Oro and Davao del Norte Sanitation Inspectors, and local responders, joint assessments and interventions were conducted in Manay and Tarragona from October 14โ17, 2025.
Initial assessments showed areas where water and sanitation support could be further improved, such as ensuring safe water sources, providing more toilets, and strengthening hygiene facilities. In Barangay Central, Manay, some water sources were found to need treatment, so families were advised to use bottled water while the team carried out immediate interventions. Aquatabs were also distributed to ensure the safety of drinking water and were promptly deployed to affected families. Similar efforts are being done in Zaragoza Gym, Felix Olea Elementary School, Purok Cabugan, and Bobonao Open Space. Meanwhile, Barangay Guza continues to serve as a good example of strong community cooperation in maintaining clean and safe surroundings.
Water testing confirmed contamination in several DPWH tanks, barangay faucets, and some refilling stations, with only a few sites passing safety standards. In response, the PHO deployed a water filtration tanker, distributed 90 gallons of drinking water, hundreds of hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and jerry cans, and conducted hygiene promotion sessions to prevent disease outbreaks.
At the Tarragona Evacuation Center, sanitation conditions have improved through DSWD, MENRO, and MLGU Tarragona efforts, including waste collection, community kitchens, and plans for modular shelters and latrine construction. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reden V. Bersaldo underscored that access to safe water and sanitation remains a top priority.
โOur teams are moving quickly to restore safe water access and proper sanitation. Weโre not waiting for problems to arise โ weโre working to prevent disease and protect our communities before they happen,โ he said.
The coordinated WASH response highlights the provinceโs continuing commitment to public health and resilience amid recovery operations.
