Get an instant mood boost from sparkling water? Scientists might have just figured out why.

According to a new small study, carbonation could boost alertness by activating sensory nerves in the mouth, which signal the trigeminal nerve, brainstem, and prefrontal executive networks.

It’s similar to another study that found the astringent taste of cocoa polyphenols can directly activate the autonomic nervous system.

Part of the benefit is the repeated stimulation with every sip, generating small bursts of trigeminal activity. A bit like the alerting effects of cold water on the face or chewing gum.

And if you’re worried about sparkling water harming your teeth, know that the amount of carbonic acid is very low. Plain sparkling water is safe for enamel (it's far less acidic than soda or juice).

Talking about supplementation is sometimes frowned upon as a Registered Nutritionist because of the very fact that supplementing is a very individual, needs-based thing which really does require personalised advice based on health history, symptoms and current medications.

HOWEVER the fact is the supplement industry is HUGE and growing, with a lot of NOISE from the world and his wife about what people should and should not be taking.

I see many clients who are so confused, at best wasting their hard-earned cash creating expensive wee and poo and at worst causing themselves damage by inappropriate use of supplements.

On that basis - I'm done being silent on this.

While it is true all that is possible on here is generic advice, if this at least gives people a framework to consider then I'll be happy *

* Obviously, taking individual and personalised advice on supplementation is 100% best done with a qualified practitioner like myself who has the clinical experience and knowledge to make sure you are helping and not harming yourself or your purse ☺

I’m often surprised how long people will put up with not sleeping well.

It’s absolutely normal to have the odd night of disrupted sleep. But if you regularly get less than you need, or you don’t wake feeling rested please try to get to the bottom of why.
