Join Dr Zehra Karademir and guest speaker Kate Pavey (Kate at Singing Mamas Colchester) as we discover how simple songs can help parents and little ones feel calm, connected, and joyful together!
Zehra is a developmental psychologist who studies how parents and babies communicate emotions. Her work explores how emotional expressions in songs can help babies’ emotional growth and strengthen the parent–child bond. Zehra holds degrees in Psychology and Child Development from Roehampton, UCL and Goldsmiths, where she examined the effects of emotional valence and musical familiarity on infant emotion and communication. Zehra now teaches undergraduate psychology students as an Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Kate works as a freelance music educator and advisor, who has trained teachers in the therapeutic and educational benefits of music and the arts. A natural voice practitioner, she also works with Singing Mamas, where the singing is primarily for the women.
Kate has seen first-hand how group singing can support mental well-being and help women reconnect with themselves and others during the perinatal period. She believes that singing together helps us connect with ourselves, our babies and the other women we sing with. Kate’s session attendees often tell her that they lose touch with themselves during the perinatal period, which can affect their mood and sense of well-being.
Kate holds a degree in Music, a PGCE in Primary Education, and is currently completing an MA in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. A firm believer that the biggest hurdle is believing that singing is something we can all participate in, Kate continues to champion inclusive and therapeutic approaches to music.
