It is completely normal to have lost the desire to cook if you have spent years dieting. Many of my clients have expressed to me that they resent cooking. I get it. I felt this way too for a very long time. All their food rules affected their motivation to make meals that they actually enjoy.

If you feel this way too, here are a few tips to help you get back into the kitchen with joy:
1. 🍽️ Understand what your current relationship to food and cooking is. Have you spent the majority of your life cooking meals as a calculation (must be this many grams of carbs, can't be inflammatory, must contain 'X' amount of protein, etc.) vs an experience? Do you manipulate every recipe to be "healthy" and stress if it doesn't fit the wellness industry's definition of an acceptable meal? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, it's probably safe to say that cooking has become really stressful and a good chance the outcome of those recipes were
2. 🍕 Don't be afraid to lean on convenient options while you are redeveloping a healthy relationship with food. The key is to remain non-judgemental to these foods especially if you have cut them out because they aren't "healthy" enough.

The world of nutrition has become incredibly confusing especially with the plethora of information that we are exposed to these days and so many people feeling the need to sell you their take on what is best for you.

As the concept of Intuitive Eating has gained popularity, I just really hope that we don’t do the same to it as we did to the nutrition industry. Let’s keep it as simple as possible.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to know if you are still dieting or eating intuitively:
1. What’s the driving force behind the decisions you are making for what, when and how much to eat?
2. How much effort is required of you to choose what and when you are going to eat every day?
3. Do the actions that you take align with how you want to FEEL?
4. How many ‘shoulds’ creep up on you during the day?

When we identify where diet mindset is sneakily hiding in our daily thoughts, the process of eating intuitively becomes so much easier. And eventually, you can go about your day without obsessing over food and your body. All that energy once spent on those areas can be fueled towards living an abundant and fulfilling life.

Concerned you might gain weight with intuitive eating?⁠

I completely understand how this can be a fear as you embark on your ie journey. It was for me too. ⁠
⁠
But intuitive eating is not a diet. Any program or lifestyle that is encouraging some form of manipulation of your food intake/habits to result in weight loss is a diet. ⁠
⁠
Everyone has a healthy weight and guess what? It is not always found within the parameters of the BMI chart that your doc, dietician, holistic nutritionist, or personal trainer is suggesting you be within. Your healthy weight is a unique weight range (because weight fluctuations are 100% natural) that is easily maintained when you listen and respond to your body’s signals of hunger, fullness and satiety. ⁠
⁠
That weight could be lower, the same or higher than where you are at right now. ⁠
⁠
And friend, I totally understand if that brings up feelings of despair. You have been told your whole life that if you just exercise a bit more, eat a little less, reduce your carb intake, and eat a few more veggies that you will successfully lose weight and keep it off. ⁠
⁠
There is a ton of research to prove that there isn’t one single diet (or healthy lifestyle) that can guarantee weight loss and keep it off for 5 years or more. ⁠
⁠
So, while I can’t guarantee weight loss or gain with intuitive eating, what I can ensure is that it can free you from years of frustration and disappointment and allow you to embrace wellness without obsession. ⁠

Are you an intuitive eater?

It’s so much more than simply giving into your cravings when you have them. It is a personal process of honouring your body by paying attention to the messages it gives you and meeting your physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental needs.

With all the conflicting information circulating around food and health, its no wonder that people are feeling at a loss of what diet to follow. But my friend, no one knows better what you should eat than YOU! We just need to quiet the noise so you can actually hear your body’s messages. And when you do so, intuitive eating can allow you to embrace wellness WITHOUT OBSESSION! It can help you find peace in your body.

Doesn’t that sound so much more appealing than restrictive diets or arbitrary food rules?
