Ongoing staff shortages, this time at Wairarapa Hospital, continue to attract the attention of the media (https://times-age.co.nz/.../wairarapa-hospital-faces.../)
'Whilst we understand existing vacancies, recruitment challenges, sick leave, domestic leave, annual leave, and school holidays, plus the unexpected family emergency can cause rostering issues, how long must doctors and nurses pick up additional shifts and duties in order to ensure appropriate and safe services? "How long will over-worked and over-whelmed clinicians be expected to take responsibility for what is essentially a Government problem?" asks Deborah Cunliffe, NZ Unions.
The New Zealand Medical Protection Society (NZMPS) stresses the importance of protecting our doctors before its too late. "Picking up extra shifts may help to pay outstanding bills, but exhaustion can and does lead to mistakes being made. Mistakes that may have serious consequences. How much longer will doctors be expected to solve what is essentially a Government issue? " Deborah Cunliffe, NZ Unions
Nationwide, Te Whatu Ora has 298 vacancies for RMO's and 2630 for nurses.
NZMPS supports the suggestion made by our nurse colleagues at NPANZ and would like to see a 'without prejudice back to work invitation', for the hundreds of public health workers, to include over 800 nurses, doctors, paramedics, carers and midwives, affected by the Covid-19 narrative.
The New Zealand Medical Protection Society (NZMPS) welcomes doctors, pharmacists, dentists and allied health looking for professional indemnity insurance, great customer service and medico-legal support. (https://nzmps.unions.co.nz/)
