🌦️ Storm Season Ready - You’ve Got This!
Hey everyone - it’s that time of year when storms and severe weather can become more likely in our beautiful Scenic Rim region. At Cherie’s Country Care, we’re all about helping you stay safe, supported and prepared- not worried.
Here’s what you can do ahead of time so you feel ready, not reactive.
✅ Step 1: Make Your Personal Emergency Plan
☑️Know how and who you’ll contact if things change (for example: support worker, family member, trusted neighbour).
☑️Choose a safe place in your home to shelter during strong winds or storms (a room with the fewest windows is often best).
☑️Talk through with your support team / carers what your needs might be during a storm – for example, power outage, mobility aids, medications.
☑️Include any pets or service animals in your plan – where will they go, what supplies do they need?
☑️Keep important contact numbers written down (just in case your phone goes flat).
☑️Save the number for emergencies – dial 000 for life-threatening situations.
☑️For non-life‐threatening help from the State Emergency Service Queensland (SES) you can call 132 500.
🧰 Step 2: Pack Your “Go-Bag” or Ready Kit
Even if you don’t need to evacuate, having a small kit ready gives peace of mind. Include:
☑️Your medications (with a list of dosage/times)
☑️Mobility or communication aids (if applicable)
☑️Water and non-perishable snacks
☑️Flashlight + spare batteries or torch
☑️Phone charger (portable/power bank if possible)
☑️A list of your key contacts (support worker, emergency contacts)
☑️Copies of any important documents (NDIS plan summary, support coordinator details) in a waterproof pouch
☑️A blanket or warm item, and suitable clothing
☑️Pet supplies (if you have a pet)
☑️A small first-aid kit
🏠 Step 3: Check Your Home & Surroundings
Just a few simple checks can make a big difference:
☑️Clear gutters, downpipes and drains so water can flow away.
☑️Secure loose items in the yard that might become projectiles in strong wind (chairs, toys, pots).
☑️Identify the strongest room in your house (usually a small interior room without many windows).
☑️If you have mobility aids or equipment, make sure they’re positioned so you can access them quickly.
☑️Make sure your support worker or carers know how you may need help in these situations.
☑️Stay informed via the Scenic Rim Regional Council Disaster Dashboard for real-time
