The current flawed governing rule for organ donation takes a one-size fits all approach that defies evidence-based peer reviewed science. Its flawed metrics harm patient outcomes and must be fixed.

We applaud Secretary Kennedy and Dr. Oz for taking decisive action based on an OPO’s patient safety, staffing, and missed donation opportunities. As they noted the system overall works extremely well. And we applaud their commitment that CMS will be focusing on increasing oversight to ensure safety and outcomes.

We have long recommended that CMS apply its successful use of independent professional survey and accrediting bodies for hospital oversight and accreditation and extend this to the Donor Hospital-OPO-Transplant Center partnership needed for successful lifesaving donation that honors donors and their families.
