Florida Keys Disability Issues No one in the Lower Florida Keys, both government and media, seems to think that we disabled have any issues here.

I've been busy lately so I haven't posted.

Time to bring y'all up to date on my sucky month.

6/6 - caught COVID Adrian brought home the previous weekend. Not good as I was supposed to finally get my left shoulder replacement on the 24th. Lucky my P*P prescribed something for both of us and my friend Amanda picked it up for us at the Stock Island CVS. I felt better after 2 doses. Took Adrian a few more days to feel better.

6/13 - Adrian goes back to work. I take one of my usual meds at 9:15 am.

Sometime between 9:30 and 10, I decide to get up, p*e, and get some food. My left arm won't work. No worry, I probably pinched a nerve lying wrong. I try to get up. My left leg won't work and I slide to the floor. I'm more annoyed than worried but I call Adrian. Twice. He doesn't answer (I called the wrong phone).

Now I'm beginning to get seriously worried so I call 911. Bless the EMTs. They showed up quickly and started working on me. I started on a full blown anxiety attack because the dogs are freaking because there are strangers in the house. Plus, THERE ARE STRANGERS IN MY HOUSE AND THEY'RE TOUCHING MY THINGS. (Yeah, it's a thing.)

I call Amanda and tell her what's going on and I can't contact Adrian. She gets someone to find him and keeps talking to me so I don't go completely bonkers.

They lock the dogs in the bathroom and move things around (no I still haven't sorted through my stuff from storage so there are boxes and stuff all over).

They finally get me into the ambulance. My wonderful neighbors come over to ask if they can help. The EMTs say no thanks. I ask them to keep an eye out for the puppies just in case they find a way out.

They wanted to take me to Marathon but I requested Key West. However, they told Amanda, who told Adrian, Marathon. So Adrian drove from Key West to Marathon.

Got to LKMC. I was calmer but still paralyzed. Adrian never showed up so I called him. He was in Marathon so he started back to Key West.

I had also texted my P*P (Bless you, Dr. Jack Norris) to let him know what was going on. Adrian finally arrived.

Now it gets infuriating.

Even though I have all of the classic signs of a stroke, the ER doctors decide I'm ONLY having an anxiety attack and try to get Adrian to take me home. He refuses because he's not taking a half paralyzed wife back to be alone at home. He knows it's not an anxiety attack as he's seen plenty of them.

Also Dr. Jack has called and demanded they do the full battery of tests for a stroke. HE knows it's not an anxiety attack also.

So they reluctantly admit me. By this time it's too late for an MRI so I can't get it until the next day. I tell them I'm claustrophobic so I'll need my usual drugs before I get the MRI. They did deny me my drugs, but I finally got some by IV so they worked pretty fast.

6/15 - they sent me home since everything was sorta working.

Lo and behold, I DID have a stroke.

So, because of my mental disabilities, they almost sent me home to die. If not for the insistence of
Adrian and Dr. Jack. Because I'm disabled.

Still not back to 100%. Neurologist says my left arm may never recover totally.

I rescheduled my surgery to 8/12. Hope I'll be ready for it then.

So I'm trying to figure out who to file a complaint with because this was inexcusable. I have been a staunch supporter of Lower Keys Medical Center for years. I no longer will be.

6/22 - the only upside to the month. We went for brunch at Blue Heaven. It was yummy.

No one in the Lower Florida Keys, both government and media, seems to think that we disabled have any issues here.

Monroe County has a committe on disability issues, but it has not met since way before Irma. The "Disabled Services" office is one person with a cell phone. No office that I'm aware of.

We deserve more.

There will be more issues as Key Westis allowing businesses to block the sidewalks on Duval Street. NO ONE thought that we disabled might want to go shopping or out to eat or drink. I guess they expect us to walk/roll out in Duval Street like drunk tourists.

This is UNACCEPTABLE.
