Public Advisory: Why Some Staff May Appear Idle While You Wait

Malindi Sub-County Hospital wishes to address a growing public concern and misconception regarding the perception that nurses, clinicians, and doctors are often seen “idling” within the hospital premises while patients and relatives are requested to wait for clinical attention.

We would like to clarify that the hospital serves as both a treatment and training facility, hosting a significant number of medical, nursing, and clinical officer students from various training institutions. These students are attached to different departments for learning and practical exposure under the close supervision of qualified hospital staff.

It is important to note that students are not authorized to independently attend to patients. They assist in various learning activities, but clinical decisions, diagnoses, and treatment are handled strictly by licensed medical officers, clinical officers, or nurses. Therefore, during busy hours, while you may observe several individuals in uniform around the facility, some of them may be students who are not assigned to patient management duties at that particular time.

We appeal to members of the public to remain patient and understanding as the hospital team works diligently to ensure every patient receives safe, professional, and quality care. Waiting may sometimes be necessary, especially when clinicians are attending to emergencies, ward rounds, or critical patients requiring urgent attention.

Malindi Sub-County Hospital remains committed to transparency, compassionate service, and continuous improvement in delivering quality healthcare to all.

NutriMama Initiative – Strengthening Nutrition and Delivery Outcomes

Malindi Sub-County Hospital – MCH Department

The NutriMama Initiative is an innovative program by the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Department of Malindi Sub-County Hospital, designed to improve maternal health and delivery outcomes through strengthened nutrition interventions and clinical management for pregnant mothers with low hemoglobin (Hb) levels.

The initiative seeks to integrate nutrition support within routine antenatal care (ANC), ensuring that pregnant women receive holistic care that addresses both medical and nutritional needs.

Intervention Flow:

1. Mapping and Identification: All pregnant mothers with low hemoglobin levels are identified and registered during ANC visits.

2. Coordinated Follow-Up: Mothers are given a common return date for effective monitoring and continuity of care.

3. Clinical Review: Regular hemoglobin testing and reviews are conducted by a consultant gynecologist to track progress and adjust management as necessary.

4. Nutrition Support: Mothers receive targeted nutrition education, nutritious snacks, and take-home fresh vegetables sourced from the hospital’s Nutrition Demonstration Garden, promoting sustainable healthy eating practices.

5. Community Linkage: Each mother is connected to a Community Health Volunteer (CHV) who provides household-level follow-up and support, reinforcing compliance and nutrition education at the community level.

Expected Outcomes:

Improved hemoglobin levels during pregnancy

Reduced risk of maternal and neonatal complications

Strengthened ANC attendance and compliance

Sustainable nutrition support both at hospital and household levels

Policy Alignment:
The NutriMama Initiative aligns with key national and county frameworks, including the National Nutrition Action Plan (NNAP), Kilifi County Nutrition Action Plan (CNAP), and the Kenya Health Policy. It also contributes to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – Good Health and Well-being, as well as the Kilifi County Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Act 2025.
