Thanksgiving is all about big appetites, but when you look at your newborn, remember: Their tiny tummy is the size of a pecan!
It is completely normal (and necessary!) for newborns to feed constantly in the early days. They aren’t drinking a large glass of milk—they are having a few sips of concentrated “liquid gold” colostrum at a time.
Here’s your quick guide to newborn stomach capacity:
Day 1 (3 Cranberries): Stomach holds just 5-7 ml per feed. Frequent feeds (8-12x a day) are essential to establish milk supply!
Day 3 (Pecan): Milk production increases, and baby is still feeding often, taking about 22-27 ml per feed.
1 Week (Brussel Sprout): Capacity is now 1.5–2 oz. Your milk supply is coming in, and the frequent feeds are setting your long-term supply.
If you are worried about your baby’s feeding frequency, please know they are following the perfect plan! Focus on the diaper output (your #1 sign that feeding is working!) and not the clock.
