Kidney question: Does the dye during a CT scan harm your kidneys?

Ask a nephrologist about this? http://bit.ly/1BTG0iR

The condition is called “Contrast Induced Nephropathy” (CIN), and not everyone has the same risk of developing it.
The worse your baseline kidney function, the more are your chances.
However, CIN is usually mild and reversible, and your kidney function bounces back and normalizes in about a week.

Why should you monitor your salt intake?

In filtering your blood through your kidneys to remove excess fluid, your body requires a balance of sodium and potassium.
A high salt diet will cause this balance to be altered, with your kidneys removing less water, leading to high blood pressure.
A high salt intake has also been shown to increase the amount of protein in your urine – a major risk factor for kidney disease.

A number of factors go into determining your individually-tailored diet when you suffer from a kidney condition: blood results, medical and social factors, your diet history and to an extent, your own specific preferences.

The point being that every patient will have different dietary requirements – what's good for one person may be harmful to another one.

Polycystic kidney disease - an inheritance you may not know about

PKD is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop in the kidneys, which can also eventually develop in your liver and elsewhere in the body.
Ultrasound is used to detect the disease in its initial stages – soundwaves pass harmlessly through the kidneys and create an image that can then be examined.
The objective when it comes to treatment is to manage the disease – of which controlling high blood pressure is the most crucial part.

Kidney donation

Living donors go through quite an experience during the process of donating, and it can all be quite overwhelming. You can now get all the information you need on kidney care on the Health Network in Continuous Care app (available for free www.needstreet.com)
The following are a few suggestions from fellow donors :

1. Donors often go through a period of depression or anxiety after surgery. Understand that all these feelings will pass, and do all you can to reduce stress during this time.
2. Chances are that the recipient is a loved one, so all your interactions with this person will help you focus on the good that you are doing.
3. Pain is a natural consequence of the surgery – but do let your medical practitioner know if it interrupts your sleep.
