Today at Parliament House, Patients Australia formally launched Australia’s National Telehealth Standards, marking an important milestone in strengthening safety, quality and trust in virtual healthcare.
Developed by the Australian Telehealth Standards Consortium, the Standards are the outcome of a national, patient-inclusive collaboration convened by Patients Australia.
We sincerely thank our Consortium partners Healthdirect Australia, Medibank, Bupa Australia, nib Group's Honeysuckle Health, HCF Australia, Eucalyptus, Updoc, Medmate, Medadvisor, Mosh, Healthengine, Wesfarmers Health, and 13SICK National Home Doctor.
We also acknowledge the organisations and patient advocates who contributed through our national roundtable, including Telstra Health, HotDoc, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, SANE, Movember, MS Australia, Arthritis Australia, and Canteen Australia, along with the Members of Parliament, Senators and departmental representatives who joined us today.
What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that it has been patient-inclusive from the outset. More than 5,000 Australians who actively use our healthcare system contributed through our national survey, sharing what matters most in virtual care and shaping the priorities at the heart of these Standards.
The Standards set clear expectations across clinical governance, patient safety, informed consent, continuity of care, advertising, technology and data security, and accreditation. Telehealth has transformed access to care for millions of Australians, particularly those in regional, rural and remote communities. But access alone is not enough. Patients need confidence that telehealth is safe, high quality and accountable.
