It took 2 years before I could look at my mastectomy scar in the mirror.
Another year before I’d let anyone take a photo

I’m sharing this to show anyone that you can learn to accept your scars
They don’t have to define you

This tulle ruffle vision was found on Etsy - inspired by the legendary Iris Apfel

My stylist says it’s too much for the stage (and she’s probably right)

Photos taken by the wonderful after we did some new headshots. She makes me feel so comfortable when I strip off and that’s why she can get shots like this.

I know some of you aren’t a fan of AI but I’ve trained Claude to do research and create content plans and it now saves me a hell of a lot of time.

The cancer space is so hard to navigate
As an educator, a writer, a doctor, a YouTuber
It’s hard to know what success looks like
As a surgeon it was easy
But now - I hate that I can be shallow
Beating myself up when a YouTube video I spent ten hours on barely made an impact
Was the time and money I spent worth it (when I could have been walking the dog or pottering in the garden or focusing on me?)
Why do I do what I do?
The only way I cope is by being Dr Liz on here, and not Liz the cancer patient.
Otherwise it’s too much. Too emotional. Too stressful.
Comparing myself to other cancer influencers
Letting self doubt and low self-worth creep in

The reason I keep doing it is because of you.
It was other women who got me through my cancer diagnoses - all three of them
I love the community I’ve created
I hate that I don’t have time to read and reply to all of you

One day I’ll finally figure it all out

But in other news - Season 4 of my podcast starts next week
So You Think You’ve Got Breast Cancer is back with a whole new look
I can only afford to do one episode a month so bear with me

Every day is cancer day.
For anyone out there who’s finding today triggering - because cancer is EVERYWHERE - I’m with you

You don’t have to bare you soul or sell your story
If you’re struggling post-op, in the middle of chemo hell, grieving for the loss of someone you love or coming to terms with a new diagnosis , you can scream and shout and pray for tomorrow to come.

I get it.
I’m with you.

Cancer turned my world upside down
I went from being a breast surgeon to a breast cancer patient
I’ve had 2 local recurrences
I’m on treatment for life
I lost my fertility, my breast, my job, my purpose
Cancer took my mum in just 5 months
It’s taken many of my friends

But I’ve also found joy, a new purpose, an incredible community
I’ve discovered I can write - 5th book on the way
I can talk
I can stand up for those who don’t have a voice
