Merry Christmas people!! 🎄🎄🎄
In last three years, I haven't missed a single book/stationary fair at Pragati Maidan. Every year, I would walk from stall to stall to find out the best material (books and stationary) to encourage Avani to learn writing. I would pick the most child friendly pencils ✏️ (big grip, small grip, textured grip), the most attractive erasers and sharpners and as many varieties of coloured sheets as possible. We would unwrap them in the most dramatic fashion at home, we would break many and tear a lot, just to get familiar. I would invite Avani with a smile, she would try, I would push, she would cry, we stop until next time... Writing didn't click 😕
In every meeting with Avani's therapists, my short term goal would be to get her to writing. I truly feel the first step towards independence as a literate being is to know how to write your name.
When you are dealing with , giving up is not an option. We kept on trying. Special educators, shadow teacher, mummy kept trying.
First the basic pencil holding, then the standing/sleeping/curve line stroke making, then writing on doted lines and then IT HAPPENED!!! Yeah, one day while practicing, I see my baby makig strokes of capital letters confidently! The writing isn't polished, we still need a lot of practise but its happening! We are using those pencils, erasers and sharpeners and sheets.
Below, Avani is wishing MERRY CHRISTMAS in her hand writing. It's signed by her too in the pink sheet. It may not be a big deal for 'normal' parents, but ask me how much I have waited for this milestone. Thank you my baby, am so proud of you 😘
